Default Partitions...or not?

So on the advice of just about everybody, I have purchased a brand new 60 gig WD HDD with the 8 meg cache.

Question: Since it's 60 Gigs, how should I partition it, if at all? I have also been toying with the idea of having a "windows partition" where I would install the OS only, then a "programs partition where the programs would live and lastly a file partition where all the user files would be stored. Is that a good idea or just stupid?

Thoughts, comments and criticisms are all appreciated.....

At the very least do 2 partitions. I always keep just the OS on one by itself, and programs on another. I actually have an Office partition, Misc, Music, Games, Files, Temp, and a FAT32.

I don't know about everyone else, but any more than 3 partitions is a Bad Thing for me, as I can't remember where I put stuff on more than that

Ok, so how should the disk be divided? 20, 20, and 20?

I wouldn't make your windows partition bigger than 8 gigs or so, otherwise you are gonna waste a lotta available drive space.

i got 40 GB Maxtor 7200 & two partition C:6 GB & D:32 GB
C:Windows98se (Fat32)
D:Windows XP Pro & games (Fat 32)
BTW: the more you make partitions the more you'll loose sapce (A bit) & once formated you'll always get less.

You won't waste space if you are running NTFS. I have 4 hard drives, 2 in raid with the above partitions, and two I use for image backups. I don't like to run mirroring because of the performance loss.

ok let the bashing begin on me for using Win 98 but i have it partitioned and when i first did it i didnt think of it being anything but after living with it a while i will never go back.i dont have it sectioned off as many as others do (2 gig for os ,the rest for everything else) but thats because i usually get mad at trying to figure out everything so i just do it that way.If i had another system so i could take things slower i would more than likely have something like BA..But as for if you should do it or not .DO IT .its so much nicer and you can figure out when things go wrong so much easier.tTry it if you dont like it no big thing if you dig it then you can either do 1) partition again with more partitions befor you get everything rockin or 2) get a copy of partition magic and you can keep going till you cant go no more.ave fun and good luck

I make the separate partitions so I can make incremental images along with complete drive images. I may only want to backup my graphics programs, or benchmarking programs, but not both.
