| Apex Advanced Techie | I know this question has probably been asked a million times but I'm going to throw my computer out the window if I have to listen this fan any longer. Right now I have a Thermaltake Volcano 7 with the heat sensor on my XP1700+, I've had it for almost a year. It does an ok job of cooling with average temps of 46c at 3,500 rpms but it's loud! I also have an intake in the front, exhaust on the back and two side exhausts, I tried them all different ways but both exhaust works the best. Can anyone recommend a hs/fan combo for around $35 that will do a good job of cooling my cpu and not be so loud? I have Arctic Silver 3 and do not plan on over clocking. Thanks. | |

| Hey Albert.... The Sk-7 from SVC.com for 19.99 http://www.svc.com/thersk7socco.html And the Panaflow M1A @ Frozen CPU http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/fan-09.html They dont stock the M1A @ SVC, but you can substitute it with SVC's own brand which offers about the same CFM , just slightly louder.(to save on shipping if you so desire) http://www.svc.com/powcool8031.html | ||

You're way off the mark there ungar', 10db is (for most people) distinctly audible -- 30db is around 100 times as loud (3db rise = double the volume). Noise level comparision | ||||||||||||||||||||

| Just like Putwig said, and one other issue. Think of decibles as an amount, but there is another parameter involved that plays a big part in how iratating a noise can be, it's the "frequency" of the sound. As an example, you can take a 60mm fan and an 80mm fan which both produce the same Db amount of noise, but the 60mm fan will be at a higher frequency and will be much more troublesome then the 80mm at a lower frequency. So where 30db on an 80mm isn't bad at all, 30db on a 60mm is horrendous. | ||

| Just because I'm a wise-ass..... 30dba = Whispering 60dba = Normal speech volume .. 90dba = Standing next to the subs at a rock concert .. 110dba = Rivet Gun ... 160dba = Shuttle launch These are approximate from the top of my head, but I believe that the actual frequency of the fan whine has something to do with how loud it is percieved... i.e the 7500rpm fan on my Volcano 6+ sounds a lot lounder than my 2100RPM 120mm fan on top of the deck, yet moves MUCH LESS air when both are running at max. | ||

| Volcano 9. The fan on it is MAX 75cfm @ 45dBa @ 4800rpm but you can manually control the fan or have it on auto control. I manually control mine. Always got her on 1300rpm(lowest possible) @ 17dBa @ around 25cfm. The fan on this heatsink is amazing. The heatsink is pretty good i find. I get temps of 30idle and 35load on my 1800+ T-Bred A with the fan @1300rpm. At max RPM(4800rpm) I get room temperatures on the CPU. Just have a well sealed case like mine, i did some modding to it and sealed everything off so it's nice and quiet + nice and cool. Trust me you can't go wrong with the Volcano 9, its dirtcheap @ $45canadian & it preforms mid range. Can't go wrong. | ||
