did you open it and make sure wasps didnt make a nest in there, lol
seriously though, yer pretty damn lucky you got 4 or 5 years out of it, monitors typically have the most disposable components in them and are designed not to last (any less than the others at least) for long times (5 years or more, but some do).
nearly any monitor (and i know there are exceptions to this) thats more then 5 years old wil exhibit some degree of an aging monitor symptom...things like weak screen, non-working controls, moire, and in more extreme cases, humming-buzzing-squealing, loss of one or two primary colors, or sloooooow warm up period or random turning on and off...
want some proof of this, degauss a typical crt monitor repeatedly and note the outcome...
if you really need to use the one you have, then id suggest turning any brightness related controls you have to the minimum for your viewing, contrast the same way, dont sit too close to your monitor either (if something bad does happen, you want it far from you, and in rare instances, harmful x-rays can be emittied for short periods of time if a certain regulator fails...however this does not sound like the case...
i have heard that putting FANS in or around the rear area of the monitor (the area with all the stuff), you give it up to 2 or 3 years more lifespan...and its worth it considering how cheap they are...
