I am gonna side with Nev on this one. Seems the heatpipe technology is simply where its at. The XP-120 is the king of P4 coolers right now from all of the reviews I have read, and it is all alum as well. It relies on the heatpipes to draw heat away, then a larger, yet lighter surface area to allow heat disipation.

I think weight has become the major issue with new HS models. Heck, there is one HUGE all copper tower cooler that is known to litterly rip the socket off if you so much move your case. The proof is there that heatpipes work wonders. I think the design is genius. You immiediatly move all the heat away from the cpu to be disipated elsewhere with a much larger surface. On top of that, you are blowing the hot air away from the cpu instead of on top of it.

Mark my words, the SI-97 will be the new king of heatsinks.

Tell me that the new SI-97 doesn't look skimpy, especially in comparison to the SP-97:
  • Multiple heatpipes for well spread heat around aluminum fins
  • Enormous wingspan gives extra cooling to surrounding components
  • Soldered fins to copper base (nickel plated) to make effective contact
  • Light weight and easy installation
I don't know, they haven't made any screwed up decisions in the past...but I somewhat doubt the cooling
capabilties of this upcoming SI-97, then again the last time I've had an alum. sink was in the Socket 423 days.

What do you guys think?

This Canadian store still has them in stock and they are on sale.

Just as a note, I found this link showing thermal dissipation in watts for almost every poplular HSF combo, I was suprised the SP-97 wasn't the top dog from Thermalright.

The SLK 900 just nips it out, I am sure that is within the margin of error though.

I was not surprised Thermalright held the top 5 spots, and 8 of the top 10

Well it's officially for sale.

The SP-97 replacement dubbed the SI-97 is for sale at an extremely low $34.99 at the heatsink factory.

Putwig is helping me out big time, he's purchasing a SP-97, from a local eTailer that had some final units still in stock, for me. I will purchase the SI-97 as well and do a comprehensive comparison in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned, fellow high-end air coolers. And in the mean time, follow this thread for updates.

AIR SMAIR...

these things are resembling mini liquid cooled systems more and more all the time.
What I see is a larger fin aray which means more disapation, a lower center of gravity, and the ability to use a pair of low noise fans in a push pull arangement...
Actually it is a decent Idea, for ya know...Air...

sweet! I'm definitely looking forward to your comparison. I really want to know how that strange-lookin little bugger (SI-97) performs.

I noticed that too, I hope they really do restock them. I will be one of the first to buy one.

Here's a review of the SI-97. Would have nicer had they compared it head to head with the SP-97.

This heatsink may be a godsend, I was planning on going with a MSI K7N2 Platinum for my next mobo which does not have mounting holes on it. I still want to see a head to head vs the SP-97 before I'm sold this thing is that good.

Unless newegg has found a distributor with more left, they will not be restocking them.
ThermalRight has discontinued to make room for the SI-97 according to themselves.

Putwig will be shipping mine soon.
