Default Broken heatsink mount - INTEL

A fellow officer of mine's PC started shutting down. Upon restart it would run for a very short time and shutoff again. I have tracked it down to poor contact between the heatsink and the processor causing a thermal overload condition and shutting down the PC. The problem is this is caused by 1 completely broken mounting tab and 1 that is cracked. Does anyone know off a product or any other way we can get this thing working again. Its a damn Dell otherwise we would just grab a cheapy mobo and get on with it. Damn proprietary POS computers.

Is the actual plastic mounting bracket damaged or the metal heatsink clips?

I think he means the plastic surrounding the ZIF is broken
my question is how did it break?

Yeah the plastic tabs that the metal clips hook onto are busted. We have no clue how it happen he was playing Madden Football when it shut down the first time. Computer hasnt been moved in a while, even so that shouldnt cause breakage.

You know, Hell...erm...Dell will replace that under warranty...they will actually replace the motherboard.

Or you can just buy a replacement bracket here

Arrrr me matey...If it's the part that goes on the top side of the mobo, that is 10-7...yerrr in luck...
Post a pic and I'll dig through me stash of P-4 HSF mounting brackets, that walk the plank when we move the air coolers off, and the water on... you'll be 10-8 in no time.

Thanks man - I have him taking me a pic in the morning and I will post it tomorrow sometime. Of course the POS isnt still under warranty - dude he got a duh Dell.

Mr ZENNZZO is hiding something or googled the 10 codes for Iowa - he got them right on .

This officer was fearing a little 10-16 from his wife if we had to build him another computer.

LOL, and they do mean BIG 16's for that kinda stuff...When I first started, my warden would have those comments, just in case this OC thing was to blame...
Nah...7 yrs of ten codes... City of Montery Fire Dept...It's funny the things you'll never forget no matter what.
We had the first "center" where dispatch wasn't a city Fire employee, they were hired by the county and did "911" calls for fire ambulance and police. Times have sure changed, PC's and NCIC, onboard fingerprint matching software...We really thought we had it going on with the old "crystal equiped" Motorola transceivers. The ones where it seemed the squelch had no adjustment , and we HAD to live within 7 miles of the antenna, for reception purposes on days off. Yup times have sure changed : thumbsup:

Why does everyone diss Dell. My Dimension 8200 is still running strong. I never had a problem with it. My dell laptop is doing awesome, it's a good heater during the winter.

I don't have any problems with Dell, but they don't use some voodoo ritual to make "rock solid PCs". They just use good components. But the thing is that they're out to make a profit just like any other company. When you build it yourself you're still allowing some company to make profit, but YOU are paying less for the same components.

Also, Dell's warranties don't last forever, and because they use a lot of components that can only be replaced with Dell products, you're going to have to pay the jacked-up price when certain things go bad.

However, I must also say that I can hardly beat most of their 500/600 dollar bargain PCs in price or value (considering warranties and all). So if you're not building a computer that you want to be your own or if you want something that is going to keep up with new technology, I thin it is best to build it yourself.
