| Apex Techie Wannabe | I can't seem to get my CPU temps down. I'm using a Zalman CNPS3100-Plus HSF on my Athlon XP 3000+ 400FSB and continually getting idle temps in the High 50's and low 60's. Using 2 Sunon 80mm exhaust fans (one in the rear and one on the side) Here's my system: AthlonXP 3000+ 400FSB Gigabyte 7NNXP 512MB Kingston PC3200 DDR memory Radeon 9800SE A+GPB 480W PSU I'm a newbie to this so any help you can give me would be great! Thanks | |

| D00d, for starters you need proper air flow in your case. I dont think I saw what kind of case you have but you need some intake fans, how many fans total does your case have? if you only have 2 then you've come to the right place, time to start cutting !!!( you've come to the right place anyways) but , turn your side fan around so that it's blowing into your case. Does your PSU have a intake and exhaust on it ?? You need alot of intake d00d, and since heat rises a blowhole on top is where your hot air should come out. On my lian li ATX case i have 4 fans blowing in and 1 blowhole blowing out. One more thing, what thermal compund you got between HSF and cpu ? | ||

| the simple answers..... A: your voltage is set too high in the BIOS B: your BIOS is reporting erroneous temperatures (VERY common) C: heatsink mounting anomalies (crud between sink and cpu core) D: inadequate cooling in and around the case (lots of fresh air coming in is VITAL) E: you mistook a waffle iron for a computer (go buy a computer) | ||

F: Your heatsink is sh!t. Go get a Thermalright or Swiftech model that will fit your board. The Zalman CNPS7000a is an excellent model too, but it won't fit your board. [EDIT] Welcome to pimprig, btw ![]()

| Check out the AMD website for the maximum on-die temp for the 3000, which, I believe, is around 85C to 90C. So, I wouldn't worry too much about the high 50's/low 60's. However, the cooler you run your computer, not only will it perform better but it'll last longer than normal. The more you heat something up and cool it off, the more wear you'll get out of it (which is why you want to leave it on all the time, if possible). Once you get a decent all copper heat sink with a 80mm fan, look for it to be in the high 40's/low 50's, unless you go with an alternate form of cooling. Hope this helps... Rob | ||

no, no, and no.... i can guarantee you that you will not make it to a genuine 65-70C before you either crash or weirdness ensues....i have no idea where AMD gets their maximum theoretical temps, but i can tell you for SURE that you want to be in the high 30's to low 40's idle, no matter what, and if you are more than 10C hotter than that, you got issues.... as for your heatsink, i couldnt care less what you use as long as your temps are below 40C idle, for example, my old 2ghz XP1700 (600mhz overclock) at 1.7vcc with a $7 Speeze all aluminum cooler....38C idle... you got some cooling issues and they shouldnt be ignored...

| Apex Techie Wannabe | Forgot to metion.....This is the second HSF I've tried. The first was the Spire WhisperRock IV and I was in the mid-50's with that, going to 60 under load. I'm using Arctic Silver Ceramique and I'm NOT overclocking. I'll try reapplying AS and remountin the HSF tomorrow to see if that's the problem. I've also heard that Gigabyte MB read 10 degrees higher than actual since the temp probe is under the die. Is this true? | |

your "issue" is most likely the BIOS misreading the temperature, and that is common on the majority of motherboards to some degree (no pun intended).... if you arent noticing any weirdnes under load, and have never had a random problem that would indicate overheating, then i seriously doubt that you are truly overheating...

ThermalRIGHT = excellent heatsinks ThermalTAKE = this is the one you don't want me to talk about...my bad...I mis-read the first ThermalXXXX and thought you were referring to ThermalTAKE on both models... Dr. Putwig is correct...ThermalRIGHT makes a superior product. Fu3lman: He's already using that heatsink, and getting crappy performance.
