Default Cheap Athlon Cooling

I just got this computer off a friend a while ago, it's an Athlon XP 1800+. I'm using it for some side tasks and don't want to spend much money on it. Right now the temps seem to be pretty high. I'm folding and it runs at around 53-57 celcius. I opened it up, and it looks like a thermalright heatsink juding by the style (I don't know a thing about amd cooling), but it's got a TINY fan. I'm pretty sure this is a 60mm fan.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to cool this thing without spending the $$$ for a new thermalright heatsink and fan. I've got a spare Volcano 7+, do you think that would get better temps?

(Case cooling is pretty low as well, 80mm in and 80mm out, but the temps are high right off the bat so I don't think it's just the case cooling).

Ok, i'll give the V7+ a try. It didn't do me much good on my P4. Too bad the V7+ is such a pain in the ass to install, nothing worse than trying to thread your own holes in a copper heatsink.

I got idles around 37C with a Volcano 11, the 7 should be alright.

The Volcano 9 has to be the worst though, it idles at 41 with good airflow >_<

have pics of this supposed thermalright?

I doubt it is a ThermalRight with temps like that unless the thermal compound is not applied properly, probably just a knockoff design by someone else.

Sorry I don't have a digital camera or I would give some pictures. I'll see if I can find it on the 'net when I get home from work. It looks almost exactly the same as the SLK series heatsinks but is much smaller. Like I said it takes a 60mm fan.

It almost looks like a northbridge cooler, if the clips weren't for socket a I would of thought it is a northbridge cooler (and guess what I plan on turning it into when I replace it?)

Found it!

Thermalright SK-6. Except I have a thermaltake 60mm not a delta for a fan. This thing should be doing better than 46 idle and 55'ish load right???

Once i've got my main rig put back together i'll try reinstalling it w/ AS Ceramique and see how the temps are.

I am not familiar with that HSF personally but I find it hard to imagine a Thermalright with temps like that, although it does only have a 60mm fan. It was probaly built for older Athlons that did not put off as much heat as the newer ones.
Not to stray too far off topic here, I see that you are a DJ as well.....what genre(s) do you play? I spin techno, acid techno, psy-trance and am slowly building an electro collection now as well.

I spin house (mostly techier stuff). It was pretty easy to guess you spin some kind of acid judging by your sig. (now straying further off topic...) I used to be a massive plastikman fan. I saw him live a while back (as richie hawtin though, not as plastikman), around when he had the decks effects and 909 cd out. It was a pretty wicked show, but it was at a bar and so the place was PACKED and got too hot and sweaty.

I will tell you one thing, if you ever get the chance to see him at his club in Detroit (I believe it is called Motor)......DO IT!!! He had the sound system custom built for the space and his style of music and it is by far the best system I have ever heard in a club, hands down.
