heres 2 ways i belive your suggesting(size not accurate obviously):

blue = airflow black =fans grey = hs.
1 simply put the fam on the heatsink - this may cause more bad than good as turbulance will be stron in the top left corner.
2 uses a duct type of mod to reduce turbulance and vibration on the CPU, plus the use of some sort of bracket so the fans dont interfere as much with each other (dotted line)

These questions can usually be answered with "there's only one way to find out...." If you've got the fan, stick it on there, let it run @ load for an hour or so and see how it's doing. Personally I think it could only do harm. Heat spreads outward from the closest part of the heatsink to the die, to the farthest, in a sort of half-spherical fashion. Putting a fan on the side of a heatsink, either pulling or pushing, not designed for it, would probably only allow less air to be blown on the hottest parts since most will exit via the side fan instead of striking the bottom of the HS. But then again, this is just speculation on my part and defer back to the first two sentences.
