| Apex Techie Wannabe | Is there any way to adjust a rheostat so it'll supply a lower voltage to my Vantec tornado. This rheo adjusts from 7 - 12 Volts, I wanna go down to about four or five, I don't even know if the fan'll run that low though. Here's a link to the rheo product page(it's the NXP-205) and one to the fan product page(the 92mm tornado). | |

| I have a 80MM tornado running of 5v with a rheostat, and it does about the same as a typical low flow 80MM, but with more noise. If you turn it down to the point you can't hear it, it is barely moving any air at all. So if noise is a concern, look elsewhere, I think the fan blades and general design are for moving air, with no attention paid to noise control. Last edited by $SOLID$ Necro; 27-May-04 at 07:56 PM.. | Apex Techie Wannabe | Think I'll just stick with the way it is, the fan gives me slight headaches but it provides awesome temps. Have mine on an SP-97 heatsink it runs in the low 30's most of the time(with just a few degrees difference between high and low speed). | |

i've got one of those and it aint all that good especially as it resets after every cold boot and i mine is a bit tempremental as it sometime has a blank screen (lit up though)

I just got a SP-97 in the mail today, it's for my DFI LanParty/Mobile 2500+ Rig I didn't see your system specs are in your profile, what are you running it on? I was hoping for some awesome temps like that, can't wait to try it out! BTW, Welcome to PimpRig ![]()

| Apex Techie Wannabe | I've got an AMDXP 2400+, not oc'd now (I did have it oc'd to about 3000, with no real temp increase). Plus a geforce 5700, one dvd burner, one cd burner, etc. all on an Asus board. I've got three 92mm fans I've tried with this: 1. A vantec stealth, hardly makes any noise but doesn't move much air, gets about 55 with it. ![]() 2. A vantec tornado, this one works best. Its really loud but it makes great temps(low -mid 30's .3. An OEM 92mm fan, this one works decent, it's really quiet but temps are about 45. When I first got the SP-97 I installed it with the bend in the heatpipes pointed up. Then I reinstalled it with the bend pointed down and I got slightly better temps. Makes the cooling fluid in those pipes flow better, I guess. Last edited by meveld; 27-May-04 at 07:56 PM.. | |

I suppose your motherboard limits you to that kind of mounting, but performance is better when the pipes are going horizontially.

| You could always get a hold of Twizted at Dragonmodz.net for a custom controller that could do as low as 4V, but as was said earlier...too low voltage and a fan won't even start. Have you considered a ducting mod? Get some fresh cool air straight to the heatsink and you can run at lower speeds for the same temps. I did a lot of work on my case fans and general ventilation, and now I never have to turn up my 80mm TT SF2 CPU fan unless I'm at a LAN in a hot room, and I run temps like your Tornado....low to mid 30's. And... welcome to PimpRig ![]() | ||

errrgh god rheostats are the thing of GCSE physics lessons - and I prefer to keep them there. There are the 12 -7 volt reducers that you can buy to quieten the fan down sacrificing a fraction of performance. You could add one of them into the circuit.

Once you trun the fan speed down that low, you might as well buy a fan designed to run at a lower speed. When running such a high speed, high capacity fan at that low rpm, it's likely to move dramatically less air than one that natively turns that slow.
