I just found out the fan on the northbridge is dead. My computer has been working fine lol? Do I really need to get a new one ( is it gonna kill my motherboard)?

I thought my stock NF7-S chipset cooler died, then I found that it was unplugged.

What is your load chipset temp? If above 35c it's time to get a NB cooler replacement.
Personally I use the Thermalright NB-1. Check out SVC's Selection.

If the manufacturer originally had one, probably. My MSI K7N2-L doesn't have one, just a passive heatsink, but better safe than sorry when the fan will only cost like $4.

It'll prolly shorten the life of it; and ofcourse limit overclockability.
Seriously though, what's it gonna hurt to get a fan for your northbridge? Better safe than sorry.

Not so sure that it would fit with that heatsink dan, it fit with my SP-97 in place.
I say look at some reviews (#1 #2 #3 ) and determine if it will fit or not.

Tycoon, yes it will work on a 9600XT ( Link ), but I would work on saving up for a better card first.
ATi has a trade-up program you know.

Thanks this is off topic but for the "trade-up" it shows the ones you can get but where can I find out how much I would get for my current card?

EDIT: or are those the only types of cards you are able to "Trade-up"?

In the trade up process you give them the model and serial of you're ATi-Based card and they will deduct a set amount from the cost of the new card, and an additional amount may be credited back to you once they receive you're card.

You can contact them via sales email for rough quotes based on make/model.

Stock one available right
here for 4.99
Lapping the northy itself will do more for you than putting the most expensive cooler on there. They arn't very flat to start with.

I almost for sure they would...tell them it that or a new Mobo soon...ABiT has a very liberal RMA policy. You can do it right there through http://www.excaliberpc.com too, they are an authorized warrenty dealer.
I think they are in the southbay area too.

I just stuffed a Sapphire GPU fan on my (was passive) northbridge. Temps dropped 2 C. I'm happy. I just had to find a way to jack it into the PSU, cause there's no header in the area. I used a molex, it spins it like nobody's business. And it looks so cool. At least till I get water...

Update: my GPU hsf recently died today so I thought it was time to fix some things. ( I actually ran my computer for a few days with a dead gfx card fan, I had an open case and a house fan on it though) ended up buying a Vantec "VGA and chipset cooling kit" for 10 bucks now my computer is about 3C cooler! haha

that does seem very high? my ambient temp is 35c on your average day, shouldnt a trouble temp be in relation to your case's usualy temp anywho? (assuming you arent operating you computer over the stove)
