Default P3-800, can I do this?

I will be putting together a spare box with a P3 800 and need a heatsink/fan combo. The only one I have laying around the house is a retail fan for an AMD XP1800. Will that work on the P3? I looked on Newegg at the fans for socket 370 and all of them seem to fit the socket A as well. If I don't have to buy one, it would be better. The one thing I know I do not want is a loud combo. The thermaltake volcano on the 1800 is beyond loud enough. Plus my room is so hot I constantly have two fans on the floor going. Anymore noise and I'd be driven completely nutty.

And as silly as that room cooling thread was, I wish I could find a solution to that too. I am in Georgia and my office is on the western wall of the house. Needless to say, when it is 90 outside, it is hot in here. The other night ambient was 84 and air from the pc was around 101. The A/C thermostat is downstairs where it is a comfy 75. LOL!

But back to the point at hand, can this retail AMD fan work or should I look for somthing else? This box is a spare and will probably be running either Linux, XP or W2K3 Server. Equipment in the box will be the p3 800, 512mb, 2 9gb 7200 rpm scsi hard drives, scsi cd, and gf4mx200 video. Thanks in advance.

Well, Tallguy, if the AMD cooler fits, wear it! It's more than adequate to handle the thermal load of a PIII800.

Yeah, it'll work. I have a Duron 1.3Ghz stock cooler on my Pentium III 800 @ 1000Mhz and it keeps it around 70 degrees.

errrrmm is that healthy? tell me thats fareignheit not centegrade. Yeh socket 462's will deffinantly work on P3 (socket 370's) - its the same size and will no doubt have a good contact with the core - use some paste tho to rid most of the heat away.

70 degrees celsius is still well within the range of what that CPU is designed to withstand. Not recommended, but it's within spec.

first, 70C is not "well within the range of what that cpu can handle", and i can almost guarantee you, assuming that is your idle temp, that you will develop problems...i am also assuming you meant farenheit instead of celcius...

your cpu is at critical temperature at 80C, this is the manufacturers maximum, and you are 10 degrees away from it...but if you are running 70F, then you are only running at a nice chilly 21C....

now THAT is well within range...
