Default e8400 + Xigmatek s1283 = 40ºC: OK?

I've got a coworker who built a PC with an Intel e8400 and a xigmatek S1283 cooler, used AS5 and has temps of around 40ºC.

Load and idle temps are the same

Motherboard is an Asus P5Q-E

Is this good? I haven't been keeping up with this crap cuz I can't afford a new computer right now anyway. Would like to help him out though.

Load and Idle temps wont be the same... check you're using the latest version of CoreTemp, or try RealTemp (think I added it to the Downloads section) to get more accurate readings.

I have an E4300 under water at 1.5vcore (~) 3.2GHz, and it loads up around 35-40c depending on ambient temps. Usually idles in the mid 20s - 30c.

Id say your friends sounds OK, but since you're reporting idle and load temps at the same values, ill wait for more accurate results before passing judgement. Preliminary though, 40c sounds OK if its overclocked.

that's the thing. It's not overclocked. I think we've got a noobie here who's put too much AS5 on the chip. I linked him to everest to take the temperatures.

Hmmm, well im not familiar with that cooler. Id have a look around at some reviews and try and work out whats a reasonable temperature to expect.

Looks like most are getting mid 20's to low 30's at idle...looks like a pretty good HSF actually. I might buy a pair for my opteron board.

he's got an Asus board so why dont take the Asus PC Probe II to read temps & volts that's what i use for my Asus board (not same board but same software) works great

ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- (go in to Utilities)

if temps are still strange or to high then take out the HSF clean every out & reinstall AS5 & HSF

also he may check to see if his Bios is up to date or not...?

Actually, he flashed the BIOS and now the temps appear to be OK now.

We should get this thing reviewed, it looks like a pretty freaking sweet cooler. I'm going to buy a pair for my dual opteron board. Cheap, and performs great! You have to use a specific method to apply the TIM though, or it won't work as well.

Several utilities have difficulty reading the E8xxx series, bear that in mind.

Anyways, as for temps, my Xeon is watercooled and lapped; it loads at 65c. Doesn't bother me in the slightest. I think people pay too much heed to temps sometimes, but there's no harm in checking what's safe.

Re the Xigmatek, it's a good piece of kit. Nearly took the crown from the TR-120E I heard.

The Xigmatek is a very good Heatsink from what I've read :-)

And while ArcticSilver5 is still a good Product, it is far from the best product available in todays Thermal Compound Market. Here's a Thermal Compound Review I've recently written :-)

It is a very good product, they sent me a couple tubes of it And it's priced reasonability well. And while I have more brands of Thermal Compound readily available, I'll run out TC Grease 1st
