Default Why did my CPU overheat?

So the old S939 4600+ I used to run made its way to the parents' box.

They came screaming when it was acting "bizarre"-- indeed, half of it had hung, and when I rebooted, the BIOS reported the processor temp at 66C.

Now, this is with an AC Freezer 64 Pro on it; I never recall it getting hugely hot in the past (and the config was basically the same.

I pulled the sink, dusted it out, and reinstalled with fresh thermal paste. Then I installed C&Q since I had forgotten... now it idles at like 35C, but:

1- in the BIOS, it pops to 47C.

2- what could have overheated the CPU? The sink hadn't dropped off, but the plastic cage had like 0.2mm of travel (damn Asrock-- not a proper retention frame, but the kind that pushes into the board and is secured with 4 little pins, more like a S478 retainer than a 939 one)

If the cage had a bit of travel (and therefore, so might the cooler) then it's possible a gap formed somewhere between the sink and the cpu. When that happens you get heat pockets and possible overheating. That's all I can think of.
