| Not bad I would had taken the risk of taking the IHS off though, probably would have gotten better results, from what I remember the P4 IHS doesn't have the best contact with the core anyhow. But hey, It looks good, what grits did you use? | ||

| How would I take the IHS off? Ive never seen it done before. I used 400 grit to take the silverish(I guess nickel) top, then 600 to smooth out the copper, then shined it up with some really good metal poilsh. It didnt really need the polish, Ive heard it doesnt do anything to the temps, but I love the shine ![]() Thanks for the response, and Im going to do my Cooler Master X-Dream III today (I know, a P.O.S., but its what Ive got for now ). | ||

Yea, I would rather not take that big of a risk, and i dont have any razors that would get the job done, but thanks for the link anyway. I did my heatsink earlier today and it came out great. i came across this video on youtube about how a lapped IHS and HSF will create a suction when pressed together. YouTube - This is Why We Lap by TheInformationator So I made my own YouTube - Heatsink and IHS lapped My idle temps went from 49-51 C to 46-48 C, load temps went from about 58-60 C to 52-54 C ![]() So I count this as a success ![]() First two pictures are before, last one is after Last edited by U8312_1337; 25-May-08 at 06:47 PM..

Nice job lapping bro! You should really try some higher grit, like 2000 or so, you can also make an "X" with a sharpie when you're down to the copper and you see your high and low spots as you keep sanding it down, keep it on a perfectly flat surface such as a piece of glass. I think you should be able to get even lower temps

The best grit I could find was 600, and I didn't have an actual piece of glass, but I have a hand held mirror I took apart ![]() I know, if I really tried and had all the right materials, I could shave off a few more degrees. Ill leave that to another day. Thanks for the responses.

| I Really like those lap jobs... My Noctua NH-U9, TDX, and my Zally 7700CU are both lapped to polish, I went up to 2500 grit on both, starting at 320grit (the zally is a bunch of thin Cu layers stuck together it was a rough one) But I'm looking to get the New GTX Cu waterblock for my up and coming E7200 rig, I'll probably have to post pics of it when I lap it. Theres a lot of hobby stores that sell up and over 1500 grit sandpaper. I got about ten sheets each of 1500, 1800, 2000, and 2500 from a site for around $.50 cents a sheet. Wasn't too bad, the 400, 600, 800, 1000, and 1200 were at the local auto parts store in ten packs for like~6 bucks. So I have a file now for sandpaper... | ||
