Default Thermal Take Big Typhon ?

Ok i got a brand new ThermalTake Typhon installed today and i just a little concern on how it is working, well when i say concern is it normal that it shuts of and on on its own, i am running a DFI Lanparty Expert mobo with a AMD X2 64 4400+, 4GB of Kingston ram, OS is XP Pro 64 bit, the 2 core temps have been running at idle around 26c to 30c and gaming it has been roughly at 40c to 45c now is it normal for this to shut of and on like this, i ask this because i am so use to seeing my CPU cooler fans i have had run all the time.

This is the CPU Cooler i got from FrozenCPU.

You're BIOS might have a fan shutdown temp of about 27-28 °C, that might be the problem.

Ok is it safe to run it like that or should i go in the Bios to adjust them, i mean it is running cool enough i just was not sure if i should run it like that where the fan shuts of and on like that.

What is happening...is that the cooling is so effective (AMD 64's run pretty low idle temps at stock speeds) it doesn't need the fan to spin all the time!

No harm will come to your CPU if you leave it like that.

The bios will automaticaly regulate temps for you by default...unless you disable it (Set to manual and you will get otehr options) if you make the fan run 100% all the time, your temps (Mostly the idle) will be even lower!

Your Bios should have a section called "Hardware Monitor" "PC health" or similar where you can adjust this.

Alternatively, you could also plug the CPU fan into another header, they often won't regulate the temps/fan rpm by default.

Speed Fan will aslo allow you to control the fan speed/temps if you configure it corectly.

SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

Oh..and if you have "Cool and Quiet" enabled in the bios, and have the proper AMD cpu driver (at the bottomof the link below) it may also be dropping your CPU muliplier and voltage at idle..wich can add to further temp reductions and power savings...

AMD Cool’n’Quiet™ Technology Overview

Just open CPUZ to verify if it is functioning, your CPU speed will be lower than stock until you apply a load (Like Folding@home)

P.S. I am on MSN right now if you need any more help, your offline ATM.

Ok i think the program i was using is a little off on temps so here is a screen shot of CPUZ and speedfan thanks to you solid telling me about them.

Core Temp is supposed to be even more accurate than speed fan...

Core Temp

Speed Fan is a great program for playing around with your RPM's though.

Just click the box that says "Automatic Speed Fan" and then those drop down boxes next to each fan that say 100% will start working (That is if the bios isn't set to overidethem, it must be in auto)

You might have to mess around a bit in the "Configure" section to get the CPU temp to show up in your tray, mine picks the wrong temp for some reason.

The "Charting" tool is also great for looking at temps at idle, 50% load and 100% load.

Actually Core temp was the one i was using to get my temps and that is where i was getting 26c to 30c idling and 40c to 45c, will mess around some with the fans speed to see what it does.

Did you have the latest version of Core Temp?

I was just swapping hard drives around the other day, and the older version I had on this drive was showing temps similar to speed fan (On the low side) compared to the newer version on the other hard drive.

There is no way it was reading right..How can my CPU temp (at idle) be lower than my ambient temp?

What's your idle temp in the BIOS? And if your BIOS on your Expert is anything like my LanParty CFX then the lowest fan shutdown temp is 26°C which is giving me cold boot problems (my ambient is about 19-22°C).

I've got the same setup as you (except using an Opteron).

The setting is in the BIOS under the PC health section. There is are two temps per fan, one is to tell it what temp to run the fan at 100% and one temp to shut it off.

When the ambient gets low enough (like the past week or so), my fan doesn't even come on.
You don't have to sweat it because the heat pipes of the Typhoon provide cooling without the fan.

According to what i see in my Bios and if i am reading them right this is what it says.

CPU Core Temp is set to auto adjust

CPU fan Fully on if CPU temp >45c

CPUTemp turns off if cpu ,25c

Im_Gumby i was amazed how actually big the typhon was i can actually put my hand right on the inside of the heatsink after gaming for 1hr and it is not really even warm.
