Default need an "OC-capable" socket A heatsink

Haha, well, i got a stock heatsink, and at full load, my athlon xp 2800+ runs at 50C. I want to oc it, so i know this heatsink isn't going to do. Any suggestions on some heatsinks?

I think these would be good for what your looking for at Xoxide.

Those are some sweet coolers! One thing to keep in mind though, is that most high end socket A coolers require mounting holes in the motherboard.

I have an old Swiftech MCX-462 with a Delta fan on it that I no longer use. (I also have an MCX-462-V that I do still use)
Works great but bolts through the mobo.
What kind of mobo do you need it for? I can't make out what your sig says.

Ok, well he doesn't need the heatsink for that board since it is Socket 478.
I guess the question remains as to which mobo you intend to use it on.

Vantec Aeroflow2:
Newegg.com - VANTEC VA4-7245 70mm Ball CPU Cooler - Retail
Zalman 7000B Al-Cu:
Newegg.com - ZALMAN CNPS7000B-ALCU 92mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan - Retail
Zalman 7000B Cu:
Newegg.com - ZALMAN CNPS7000B-CU 92mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan - Retail

The Zalmans need holes in your motherboard to mount correctly, the Vantec doesn't need any holes but is loud as heck without a fan controller.

Edit:
The SI-97A from ranger1033's link could be the best option for motherboards without holes.

The Thermaltake Big Typhoon from ranger1033's link could be the best option for motherboards with holes and if you want to use the cooler for any current generation processor.

IME, the 7000AlCu's a little disappointing, but that's when it's paired with hot-running pre-Energy Efficient X2s. I slapped it on a Duron 1.6 at 1800/150 (the board was the limiter) and it was fine

oh and sorry, that sig of mine is outdated. I'm on a whole new system...haha sorry about that. My mobo is a PC CHIPS M848A. Oh and a lot of these look pretty damn heavy haha. and yes there are mounting holes, here are some pics (and i know, it is a tad bit messy, and yes i will get another rounded cable soon lol). I have to be pretty careful installing heatsinks...socket A is so damn tricky.

Yup, no holes on that board.

That means you have the Thermalright SI-97A or the Vantec Aeroflow2.

If you have the cash, go with the Thermalright and buy any 92mm fan that you prefer to go with it.

You may want to check again, every pic I have seen shows the mounting holes... and he even said himself that it does.
The SI-97A is still a good cooler and will still fit, but there are other options out there.
The SLK 900 series is great too if you can find one.

Not a bad cooler, but for Socket A I would rather have something from Thermalright or Swiftech (which I do BTW, both of them).
I do like the aesthetics of the Zalman though, just make sure if you do get it to keep it air-dusted fairly frequently as they do trap dust easily.

Yup, stupid me. I thought the holes would be top and bottom (personal experience), not left and right.

Okay. Then maybe the big typhoon. From what i've heard it's pretty damn big...i'll have to be careful installing it...socket a is pretty tricky to use...as i found out installing the stock heatsink. Well, i guess i'll pick up my paycheck and order it soon.

Your not going to get very far Overclocking on that board most likely..I bet it doesnt even have voltage options for the CPU!

If so, you stuck with default CPU volts...and 100MHZ or so will be doing well.

There are "Pin" mosd that can sometimes be sued to fool the Bios to setting higher voltages than what is stock for your CPU, but if it allready has it set to the maximum for XP chips...you can't go any higher most likely...though, I do see options for up to 1.85v on the pin mod guide, you will just have to try.

OverClocked inside - Redaktion ocinside.de PC hardware page

Some of the better OC chips chips are default to 1.6v like the DLT3C 1700~2100+, but most are 1.65v, only the older Palimino based XP chips used high volts....you have a Barton, not sure if that will work.

I would suggest the zally, but you would need a faster fan on it to actually OC alot. Like godfoot said, they are aesetically pleasing, but not the best OCer. I replaced the fan with a 4000rpm 92mm fan i had laying around (yes you cut it out and remount it) but it improves the hell out of cooling.

PC Chips isnt a brand i like much, they have horrid issues with failing out of nowhere.
