Default stick a SATA controller on a ATA drive?

i was just wondering, if i were to pick up a SATA controller for a seagate drive (from the same size HD, but just the sata version) would i be able to stick that on a ATA drive and expect it to work? or is it just different?

I am going to have to say know you can not as ATA are considered IDE and SATA is a whole different kind of connector that is why you would need a controller card unless your MB has a supported connectors for SATA Hard Drives.
Here is a nice little article you should check out ATA vs SATA link here is another nice article link

Well they wont physically connect together unless you use an "Ide to Sata" drive converter.

I use them on a couple Ata drives that I run as Raid 0 through the Sata Ports on my Mobo, and it works perfect

Just as clairification are you talking about a PCI style raid controler card, or are you talking about the hard drive controller card that is physically connected to the bottom of the hard drive? It seems to me that both the answers so far apply to having a PCI raid controler card and not the controller for the actuall hard drive.
