Default Curse You 939!!!

Your days are over!

If all goes well next month I will rid myself of this late build a.k.a waste of my money, and move on to conroe or some crap. I'm thinking E6600 etc.

Basically, cutting the crap - Would anyone care to recommend me a spec? I want to keep under a grand. At this stage, it's motherboard, RAM, and CPU, as I'm familiar with graphics cards and so fourth, it's just the change from AMD.

Now what I don't want to do is get something now only to find out that in a couple months some AM3 quad-core A64 contender for the conroe is here. I'll wish I waited, and get buyers remorse again.

I want at least an E6600, I want at least 2GB of PC6400, and nigh on the best board.

So what, at the moment, and keeping under £1000/$1000 (prices are most often numerically similar), is the best **** I can get? And is there anything I should be aware of before I buy, such as changes to come? I want to stay at the front witht this build for as long as I can.

Leave it to T2 to find the deals. As far as heatsinks go. I have a "New" not yet
released to the public Thermaltake TMG i2 heatsink (review here)
HardwareHell - Articles - Thermaltake TMG a2 & i2 CPU Cooler Review - Review
or a Coolermaster HyperTX (the review hasn't been posted yet) that are damn good

Yeah a friend told me the 680i was good but on the expensive side.

Thrasher - I read the following on your link, regarding the Dominator:

Cons: Not for overclockers. At one point, they were great sticks. Some time in November they switched from Micron chips to Promios, which all but destroyed the ability of the chips to overclock.

So... It seems either way I'll be getting the 680i (as it seems to be the best) and the E6600 (the best I can afford). It's just a question of RAM I guess. What about PC2 8888 Dominator RAM though? Worth it if I can afford it? The 8500 modules are gonna have lower timings ...worth it from 6400 at lower timings, all things considered?

Also, if I go for PC6400, I'll have more towards an 8800GTX graphics card. ^_^

Thanks for the help, people.

I recommended the PC8500 because it will give you more headroom
for your overclock. I don't think the Dominator Series is really needed.
I have the Corsair PC8500 I linked and I've got it running at 800 MHz
at 4-4-6 cas 4 1T timings. It's pretty kickass. And if you get the cash
later for a faster cpu it will still be solid. The 8800 would be nice, but
I think that by the time DX10 games arrive we'll be seeing 2nd Gen.
DX10 cards, and 8800's will be alot cheaper :-)

Everyone I know keeps telling me the 8500 is not worth it now and I should stick to PC6400 unless I'm doing massive overclocks. WHAT DO I DO? I'm buying this Friday.

The E6600 runs at a fsb of 1066. The PC2 8500 runs at 1066.
So if you buy slower memory as in PC6400 which runs at 800,
you'll have to oc the memory to run 1:1 or just let it run slow.
If your going to oc the cpu you'll have plenty of headroom and
your memory won't be holding you back with the PC2 8500.
Where as the PC2 6400 will be the limiting factor if you get it.
And I still think your 7950GT will be good enough for the games
coming out now. By the time DX10 games really start showing
up there will be a newer faster card out and the 8800 your
wanting now will be alot cheaper. I paid $600 for my 7950GX2
when it came out. When the 8800's came out I picked up a 2nd
7950GX2 for $400. I think you should buy a 2nd 7950GT and sell
them when the 2nd Gen. DX10 cards come out :-)

For the moment I'm happy with the card I have.

If PC8500 isn't a waste, I'll probably get the 8888 Dominator stuff. S'not that much more.

I have the money to get a quad-core QX6700 but I can't find a single person who doesn't tell me it's an utter waste of money to get anything more than the E6600.

I tend to spend alot of money very freely. But I'm still
not sold on the Dominator Series. Get it if you must,
but I think the regular XMS2 PC2 8500 will be good
enough for a while :-)

Intel is about to release a cheaper quad core at 2.4ghz, for around 500$ if that makes it a easier on the decision making for getting a Quad

And if you have a decent vid card now..then hang on the upgrade if you can't afford the 8800GTX or GTS..there is a 300$ 8800GT due out next month, with the 8600 series for 250$ or less around then too.

I can't see dropping any coin on a DX-9 card at this time...it's like throwing money out the window, unless you need something now, or can't afford 250$ in a month or so.

No, I won't say that. But I do a lot more stuff than just gaming. So I'm actually
enjoying a benefit from multiple core computing already :-) The future is multi-core.
And the time is now. It won't be long and we'll start having all kinds of software that
supports these new cpu's :-)
If you've got a dual or quad core cpu you can go here and download the
Ice Storm Fighter demo and test your rig out :-)
