Default Speakers and Sound Cards

I'm starting to learn what the digital or optical output ports are for. And I also plan to upgrade my PC audio system in a few months. I like the Logitech Z-5450 315 Watt 5.1 CH Speakers with the nice, big subwoofer (for my rap and hip-hop music). I also know I will purchase a Creative X-Fi Fital1ty Sound card with the I/O port. I understand that the port has optical in and output ports for speakers like what I'm trying to find. Is that what I use for those speakers? What does that port have advantages over? Does it sound clearer? I also don't like how it looks like you have to route it through the front of the PC......

Here is the product page for those speakers. From reading that it seems that they have an optical (ie fibre optic) input which is what you want. You will however have to connect this from the X-Fi breakout box on the front of your PC as X-Fis dont have optical-out on their back panels.

Having an optical connection mains that there is absolutely no hiss and next to no signal loss at all. I'm using an optical connection to my surround sound speakers and the difference is marked, especially when you turn 'em up.

Do most people get the 5.1 Speakers even though they don't route the rear satelites? I am thinking about the Z-5500s but I can't route the back ones. I'm in it for the Subwoofer and the front speakers. Also, how do you set up the 5.1 cables if there are no subwoofer and center ports, like, on the SoundBlaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Sound Card?

Nah, nobody gets a 5.1 speaker set and dumps the rear two. The individual satellites aren't that powerful, so you lose two of them and you may as well get 2.1. Surely you can place your rear speakers somewhere?

On my digital surround speakers, the optical lead goes from the PC to the back of the subwoofer, and the speakers are attached to that. No need for specific centre/L+R ports on the soundcard if you're going digital.

If you are going 5.1 I would look into Klpisch promedia 5.1 ultras...

I have had them for almost 5 years and still love em'. We has some monitors in the studio that did not reproduce sound as good as my set of Klipsch 5.1s

Ok, i guess i'll go ahead and find a way to route them and mount them on the wall. I might just route it under the floor.
