Default Need help finding a AC adapter

Ok guys was not sure if this was the right place to post this so here we go i have a Ultra Mini Portable Hard drive kit that i needs a AC Adapter and i can not find the owners manual to check to see what size it is, does any body know of where i can get one that would be the right size i guess they would call it the voltage so as not to burn up the kit, as i am not very firmilar with electronics i just know it needs to have the right size to make it work.
This is the Ultra kit i have. TigerDirect.com Super Buys - Computer Parts, PC Components, Desktop Computers, Laptops, Notebooks

Online manual here http://static.tigerdirect.com/pdf/Ul...ure_Manual.pdf
Its a 12v DC powersupply you might be able to pick one up at Radio Shack.

You'll need something along the lines of a 12V, 2amp one I believe - Most of the external USB drives here take that spec

Just check that it has the right connector!

Thanks MasterP for that info, it sucks cause i knew i had it when i bought the kit and i can not find the power cable now since i did some cleaning up in my room, i been wanting to hook it up to see what i had on the drive plus put some extra files on it for safe keeping, so i am thinking by accident it might have got thrown out with my sister who was helping me to clean my room. I have a couple adapters here but have to see what size they are and see if they will even plug into my kit.

Ps i just found a adapter that fits, but I am on sure if it ok to try it, these are the specs on the adapter i found . Well i check it out and does not work but it does fit the kit, so i am presuming there is ether not enough power that goes through the adapter i found to run the drive kit.
Model GW-090100
Input AC100-240V 50/60Hz
Output DC9V=1A

Walmart usually carries some wall wort AC adapters that come with a variety of plugs, and can operate in a range of voltages. If you ever lose the wall wort, just look them up, they usually run about $15-20.

Like THIS ONE.

That's too underpowered I'm afraid - You'll need 12V to get your drive to spin up

Well i went toWalmart last night and pickup the adapter GrandpaNoob72 suggested and it does not work, it turns on the drive kit and it sounds and feels like the HD is spinning up but when i go to my computer to see if the drive is showing up it is not there, so i am saying to myself it is on and sounds and feels like the drives is spinning up but just does not show up on my computer, so i said i will shut down my pc then start up the drive kit first then boot up the pc to see if that will work and still shows nothing, also tried both USB and still nothing, so i said ok lets try this on my friends computer i live with he has the same drive kit so i will have him try it on his pc using his power cord and guess what it works, so i am guessing the adapter i got from Walmart works just enough to turn on the power to run the leds and fan but does not have the power to boot up the HD, can some one please explain to me why this would work this way, is it because there is not enough amps but has enough volts to just run the fan and
leds and not the HD.

PS, when i said it felt like the HD was spinning up it must have been the vibration from the fan running.

Ranger, is there any raised print on the back of the enclosure, near the power plug? I've looked at the Ultra site, at the manual, at the TD site, and other than 12V, I'm not seeing anything that would give me a clue as to why it isn't working...

Did you get this enclosure new or used? If you got it used, I'd pay the seller a visit and strongly ask/suggest that they help you find the power adapter...

Probably not enough amperage.

MasterP suggested 2 amps... 600mA is nowhere near that. I personally have no clue how much an HDD draws though.

Not EXACTLY the enclosure you have... Off by one number at the very end, but...

ULT31309 hard drive enclosure - Ultra Products - Tech Forum

Actually, Ranger, read through some of the other threads and comments in that section, a couple good ideas here and there, just in case...

I baught the enclosure new but is been about a year now since i got it, i look at the back of the enclosure and there is nothing that states the size adapter or power usage, the only thing it says is DC power where the cord plugs.

TiZakit i am pretty sure that you are correct but i wanted to make sure it was that, like i said before i am very unfirmilar with electrical and just like to make sure it was that.

I think i might have to see if i can get something at ether BestBuy or Radio Shack to see if they would have something that will work, so i am pretty sure the adapter would have to say 12Volt 2amp to make it work unless you guys would know of something else i could try.

Ps. i think i am going to give Ultra customer service a call and see if i can order a adapter from them or see if they can tell me where i can get one to fit the drive kit.

Brother, I'm sorry that the Wallyworld adapter didn't work for you...

A couple months (maybe longer) ago, I bought a 4-port router from Spectrum (I think), and it didn't have an AC power adapter with it. I bought the Wallyworld adapter, and it worked for me fine, still does, that's why I recommended it to ya...

Best Buy or Radio Shack should be able to hook you up if Ultra doesn't sell them direct...

I would suggest that you try taking the enclosure in to test any adapters out before you buy, I don't think BB or RS would have too much problem helping you out like that...

Harry Chrismahannukwaanzika to you, BTW...

I'm an ass for not checking this earlier, I have the exact same enclosure, here are the specs:

Primary: 100-240V ~50/60Hz 0.6A
Secondary: 12V (line with three dots under it) 0 - 2.0 A (Set at 2.0A)

And it's a Hon-Kwang (I.T.E. Power Supply)
Model#: HK-B124-A12

Hope that helps.

PS Thanks 4x0n for all that info it will definately help out.

Thanks for all your help, i just got of the phone with Ultra and of course they do not sell the power adapter, but they did confirm to me the adapter needs to be a 12Volt 2Amp and would have to make sure to get the right plug in to plug it into the drive kit. So i guess i have to go to BB and RS to see what they have, i like to ++rep you for your help but need to spread some around again darn'nt LOL.
By the way have a very Merry Christmas to you and the rest of the Family.

I checked radio shack out for you... biggest they have is 12v 1.5A

I'm checkin somewhere else right now...

Edit... I took a trip through my mouser electronics catalog...

The universal ones I found were all around .5amps

so with a little hacking you should be able to rig something up with mouser stock # 552-psa-31u-120

http://www.phihong.com/assets/pdf/PSA31U.pdf << data sheet

$27.75 made by Phihong. The output is 2.1x5.5mm center positive, so a trip to radioshack for the correct post might be in order... or, if you know what it is, I could look it up in the catalog..

Well i did a little research and stop at BB and RS and had no luck coming up with a adapter so i said screw it and bought another HD kit from Tigerdirect , i look at this way i will have 2 external kits and when i want to use it i will just have disconnect the power adapter and use it on my other HD kit i know it is a pain in the butt to do this, but with no luck on finding the adapter and having no skills in soldering or electrical to make one i figured it be just as easy to buy a spare HD kit and use the right power adapter between the 2 kits.

Thank you guys for all your help...

You might try:

-Goodwill / etc looking for a similarly-speced power brick, usually a buck or two.

-BGMicro has a wide range of cheap power supplies, and you might have to solder a custom cable (maybe salvage one from another brick)
