Default Hard Drives Capacity

When you buy hard drives, how much does your computer say it really is? I have a 300GB Maxtor drive in SATA, and my computer tells me I have 279GB. I'm getting new drives and I want to know how much you guys have and I also want to know how much you really get in a RAID setup.

You get 93% of what it says once you format and you dont lose anything extra to RAID.

There are a few different types of RAID, but the one you're probly thinking of is RAID0. In RAID0 you use two harddrives to increase speeds, but if one crashes you loose all data from both. This setup does not cause any loss in available space. There are also other RAID setups (such as RAID5 I believe) that function as backup security. RAID5 will clone all information on another harddrive at all times to ensure protection against data loss.

I have a little under 500gb, but only have about 50gb free across all drives. I'm going to buy another 300 pretty soon =]

Yep, Cyno01 is right on the money. I have a WD 160Gb running my OS, and it's displayed at 149Gb total. I also have a RAID1 mirror array configured that is made of 2 WD 180Gb drives, and it displays 168Gb of total space... both of those works out to 93% of the spec'd drive space, on the dot.

Yup,

74GB = 69.2 = 93.513513513513513513513513513514%
250+250GB = 465 = 93%
80GB = 74.5 = 93.125%
