Default Another Tools thread...

Like usual, I fix random things around the house.. electronics. etc etc etc.

So my crappy little eletronic screw drivers are no good. I have small hands, and I need a better grip. The ones I currently use (or try to) look like this:

Now I'm looking for something that I can grip easier with my flimsy sweat shop hands. As of yet I've had to wing it with various swiss army knives, toothpicks, etc.

I need all varieties of screw heads if possible, must have standard ones, then torx.. etc.

Here's what I've taken a look at so far.

Amazon.com: 17 Piece Precision Screwdriver Set: Electronics
Looks like it would be easy to grip. Not sure if it will be long enough to reach all the way down into those little screw holes.

PLATINUM TOOLS 19101 PRECISION SCREWDRIVER SET

Once again skeptical on the reach of that. Looks good with attachments. May be a little wide to fit in little hole.

Deluxe 16 Piece Precision Screwdriver/Hex Set (A28)
El Cheapo. Maybe I will give it another go.

excluding the last one, theyre all kind of price-y.

Let me know what you think, and suggestions people! Suggestions!

Please?

Oh yeah, Wire stripper suggestions. That just hit me. Lol. Started looking....

I use the snap-on electronics screw driver set. sde70 They have the slightly fatter shaft on top for a good grip. The metal bit is right at 2 inches from tip to handle. They run in phillips with the No1, No 0, No 00. Straight blade is 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3mm. The little black cap on the end swivels also. They are kinda pricey but they are lifetime replacement on the tips as well as the handles.

You pay dearly for anything with the name Snap-on on it. But if you break it, they replace it.

for precision and electronic work, wiha Wiha Professional Quality Tools Home Page is the way to go. if you get them locally like at a components store, hobby shop or Frys they are usually the ESD safe line. i think they are usually $30 for a set of 6 or you can get a handle with double ended tips/shafts

Ya, snap-on ain't cheap. I guess I am just kinda used to the prices. It's the free replacement and the on truck credit that keeps me buying from them. The snap-on driver is at our shop usually every Thursday so I don't need to even drive anywhere to buy tools if I know I'm gonna need something ahead of time. I figured it out off of snap-on's website and just the tools in my wrench drawer, (box, open end, ignition and adjustable) are worth around $2,200. I have wrenches that go from 3/16" up to 1 3/4" and they are all standard size, no metrics. Thats a whole different drawer.

I used to have a set of cheap jewelers screwdrivers that had a hole drilled through the handle. The set came with a 40mm long metal rod that fit through the hole. Great for leverage.

Maybe you could drill holes in a cheap set?

The reason the handles are so thin,is to keep hamfisted people from overtourqing and breaking the screws!!!

Hey, if you haven't picked anything up yet, I second the craftsman set..

Look like the Snap-on but cheaper. Alas, they also feel a bit cheaper too. Great for general electronics though, but if you need to get some torque behind it, your looking at the wrong company.

Ehh.. Still not sure. Still using these cheapies... Brian has a 35% discount with Snap-On from his autoclass, so I think I'm gonna abuse that.

I have found the Kronus screwdriver set from Idio...errr, Radio Shack to be of decent quality, comfortable grip and with a good selection of bits. Not bad for $15, less if you catch a sale.

If you have a Home Depot in the area, you can also check out their Husky 8-in-1 Precision screwdriver. It comes in a Torx and a slotted/phillips version for $5.97/ea. I prefer these as they take up very little room and all the extra bits store in the handle. I keep one of each in my pencil cup to always have them handy.

Wordbiker, It looks good, but I'm not exactly sure it'll fit into little screw-holes like for lap tops..

Hmmm....it's worked on every one I've taken apart so far. I guess I'll buy a full set when I find one I can't take apart with the Husky.

I have the tool wordbiker suggested from radio shack. it's very comftable and easy to handle small tasks.

But.. the bits get lost soo easily. I rather have a set with individual drivers. The box it comes with doesn't really hold the bits well and if you drop it or in my case, put it in your tool box where it'll open and spill, you'll start losing bits.

Agreed....that's why I prefer the Husky.

I also agree that nothing beats a dedicated set of drivers over a multitool....if you have the room. For a very inexpensive tool that gives me the bits for 95% of the jobs I do, I like the multi.

You need something like this. The bright handles also make it easy to find.

Hey I was rereading this post and realized you asked about wire strippers also. The Ideal Stripmaster is the brand I use. HERE They have different models that will strip from 8 awg down to 30 awg wire. I personally have the 45-092 model that does from 10-22 awg and the 45-097 model that does 16-26 awg. Most normal people wouldn't wear them out but the cutter teeth are replaceable if they ever get damaged. You won't be out your full purchase price if they get nicked or worn down. They are a very accurate set of cutters also. I use them to strip both solid and stranded core wire. They do a good job of stripping the teflon and tefzel coated wires, along with your normal pvc coated stuff.

I was actually, I was looking at a set of these at Home Depot just last week.

I was considering something cheaper like this Ideal Super T®-Stripper Wire Stripper And Cutter For 8 - 16 Awg Solid - $18.95 at Home Depot
