Well the only laptop that comes to mind in my book is IBM's thinkpad. Durable, powerful, and well, they dont depreciate in value like dells or any other laptop maker.

I'd suggest an Acer. You get a lot of bang for your buck and they're reliable too. But what budget do you have?

Don't you mean Lenovo Stupid name change... But they'll never be considered "affordable" but they do kick ass.

If I were to buy one today, it'd be this one.
If you just need the cheapest thing possible, look at an Acer.

That seems a decent machine. It has a Core Solo 1.86ghz (essentially a rebranded Pentium M), lots of disk space and a DVD re-writer. It'd be better if it had another 512mb of RAM, but I doubt your girlfriend will run very demanding programs. You won't find better value than Acer at this price range. IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads are rock solid, but very poorly specced and really geared towards the business user - as such they have functions that your girlfriend probably won't need.

One thing to be aware of with Acer laptops is that they partition the hard disk into two sections - both in FAT32. I can't understand their reasoning for this, but regardless you may want to reformat when you get the machine, it's your choice.

will it come with those stupid system restore cds that format it back to how it was.. or will it come with windows..

reformating it would be easy, but not if its just gonna set it right back up fat32 when i try to put windows back on it..

I'm not actually sure to be honest. Generally cheaper laptops only have restore partitions and the more expensive ones come with proper windows disks, but you could always buy a new copy of Windows if you couldn't live with the hard disk setup.
