Is this videocard crap?

Just like the title says I want to know your opinions on this videocard. Link
It is an ATI Radeon X600 SE 128MB PCI-E. A friend of mine is trying to buy all the parts he needs for a decent PC and he needs a cheap PCI-E videocard to get him by. Any thoughts on this card?
The reason I am asking is because I don't use ATI, I am an nVidia man, so any help is greatly appreciated.

For 30$ it's not bad for surfing the net and old games...good enough till he can get something better!

I am with you, I prefer NVIDIA, that work best with AMD, ATI works best with Intel.

This is a little off topic, but has anyone tried the new GeForece 7950 GX2? It looks pretty sweet with 1GB of GDDR3

Yeah that x600 will get him through older games, but it won't look so sweet.

The 7950 looks good, but I wonder about the effectiveness of 1gb of memory, it will be another year beofre anything comes close to utilizing it properly.

Really, I didn't know that games were limited to the amount of video memory they could use. Thanks for the tip.

They aren't limited, they just won't be able utilize it effectively, most games just aren't programmed for it.

One of the main reasons for high amounts of video memory (GDDR3 in this case) is it holds the textures, so having a larger amount of video ram is helpful in running very high resolutions while gaming, it really doesn't matter what the games programmed for, that doesn't have much to do with it.

I was able to play Far Cry and Half Life 2 on an X300SE before I got my Geforce 7800 GT.

If an X300SE can handle those games, I'm sure an X600SE will be able to handle the latest games on low or maybe even medium, as long as you keep AA and AS off.
