just a bump here to see if someone can tell me if i can mix a 1GB strip with a 512MB strip i have one of the Value selects and just pickup 1 of the 1GB strips of the Corsair XMS PRO SERIES both strips are by Corsair, i know that my Mother Board will suport up to 3GB of pc3200 400 ddr.
this is the one i just bought http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1134699426031 and wanted to see if it was ok to run both of them together or am only going to be allowed to run 1 of them.

You will have 2gig mem on your system but I`m not sure if your dual channel option will operate.Run memtest86 to know for sure what is going on in there.Jo

Actually i am only going to have 1 strip of 512MB and 1 strip of 1GB, i can not seem to get memtest86 to work and i am not sure what i am doing wrong i followed all the directions and it will not do anything.

Ranger, I'm pretty sure you know that you need to have sticks of matching specs to run DC efficiently, ie: 2 sticks, same capacity, same speed, same latencies. Not necessarily the same brand (I've done it before)...

I would go with matched pair sticks as much as possible, and then same make/model/capacity/ speed/latency before I mix brands (last resort)

Yeah, dual channel won't work w/ two different sized sticks. You will just have 1.5GB of ram in a single channel setup; you should still see a performance increase over your original 512MB.

To me buying the XMS Pro is kind of pointless. It costs more and all you are getting is some flashing lights. In my opinion I would just save my money and get a 1gb moudule of the corsair value select.
