Default Thinking about a laptop...

Been looking into getting a laptop for around £400.

So far this is the best one I can find. It meets all my requirements, except that it doesn't have a widescreen. Now when I've looked for ones with wide screens for the same price they all tend to be Celeron M's and the like and they might not have wifi or less ram and hdd etc etc.

Thing is I want to make sure I've got a roomy enough viewing area on the laptop so any res above 1024 x 768 is what I'm after.

Anyone got any thoughts on this? Would I be dropping alot of performance if I went down to 1.4/1.5 celeron m?

Thanks in advance

Have you looked into DELL?

Say what you like about them, but their laptops are pretty damn cheap! lol

You'll be sacrificing power if you go to the 1.4/1.5PM's. I wouldn't go below 1.6ghz personally.

I think its a bit heave for a laptop with that kind of minimal power... but other than that... things should be fine!

Well the main problem for me is the lack of a widescreen and the video chipset might not be 100% vista compliant.

But then to get a descent chipset I might be looking at the sempr0n options.

Its either that or some kind of half way meassure where I might get some kind of portable media player but then my playback options really suck.

You want it for vista? Well thats a big hill that lptop has to climb, it'll run but slow as heck, and you won't get any of those nice aero glass graphics either.
If you want to run vista even reasonaly well you need to be looking at processors of no less than 1.7ghz, more than 512mb of ram 768 would be my recommended minimum and a GPU with dedicated memory of 128mb or more.

Unfortunatly your more likely to win the lottery than find a laptop of those specs for £400.

Well the chipset meets all the vista requirements, and the video on it meets all the hardware specifications for the eye candy, its just weather or not intel produce the drivers for it.

I know vista will be more demanding on the specs but the current beta isn't really a reflection of how well its going to run.

I'm quietly confident that it will work, but then I'm thinking about running linux on it anyway..

edit: Of course more ram is a must..
