Sound card: Sound Blaster X-Fi ExtremeMusic, only $122 at the Egg.
Hard Drive: Samsung Spinpoint 160GB SATA 3.0Gb/sec, only $67.99! I recommend these drives as they are extremely quiet, and offer good performance for the specs.

What are the specs of the system you are building?

Ha, I have an old HP Pavilion 500Mhz system running my 10Gb of music right now... I knew I'd find a use for it someday.

I would choose speakers first, then sound card.
Reason I say this is because if you are going to choose Creative's speakers, then by all means go with the X-Fi. But if you are going to use other speakers or want to run your sound through your stereo, then you might want to look at other options.

You could use a PSone lcd if you're looking for something small... these can be had on ebay for about 20 or 30 bucks I believe.

i considered the psone lcds, but then i dont want alot of custom work or anything because this will get use from others besides me, and lets just say my family isnt too "technololgy sensitive" ie: brother taking off cpu fan because it was loud....

I'm having a really old laptop sent to me, i'm just gunna plug in my old and on its way out external hard disk and stream from it. Hopefully save me some space on my laptop hard disk and allow me to play music without compromising game performance.

Well, for a substantial chunk off the price you would pay for an X-Fi, you could go with a very nice Turtle Beach Montego with Dolby Digital Live (on the fly encoding).
