Default putting drive and hdd on same cable

I'm curious, and before I dive into my computer, i'm curious, can i put my hardddrive and my dvd-rw drive on the same ATA cable? And if i can, can i have my dvd-rw drive on master and my hdd on the slave part of the cable and just change the jumper settings so that my hdd is master and my dvd-rw drive is slave?

You can, but it'll slow down your system because DVD and CD drives are a lot slower...I think they still run on ATA-33.

I tried that once and it wouldn't work, but I think the hdd was my boot drive and it didn't like that. I can't remember for sure tho. I'd suggest putting the hdd as the master just to be safe.

Ideally, a burner should be on a separate IDE channel. If you use more than 2 IDE devices, it would depend on which ones you are using.
For instance, if you have both a cd/dvd burner as well as another cd-rom drive, I would hook up the cd-rom as the slave on IDE 1 (with hdd being master), and then the burner as master on IDE 2 with whatever else being the slave.

Don't add any opticals to any channel with your hard drive, unless it is a storage or secondary hard drive. The slower ATA-33 drives will negatively impact the hard drives performance.

Good point, but a burner will also suffer from being on the same channel as an HDD.
If you can get around it (say if you only have 3 IDE devices), use the HDD by itself on IDE1 and the opticals on IDE2 with the burner as master. That or get SATA drives if your mobo supports them.

alright....lol i got a sweet ide rounded blue uv cable off of ebay...but i didn't know it had two connectors...just would mean less clutter. yeah, all of the optical stuff still runs at ATA-33...i dunno why they don't make it faster.
