Default Antec Sonata II + SLI

Hey guys,

I was just building a computer this weekend for a friend, using these specs:

-Sonata II w/ 450W SmartPower 2.0
-Asus A8N-SLI Premium w/ DualDDR400, 7.1 Audio, Dual GB Lan, 2 x PCI-E x16 SLI, Cool-Pipe
-Kingston HyperX 1GB PC3200 Dual Channel DDR Kit
-AMD Athlon 64 3500+ w/ 512K Cache (Retail Box)

And I had a couple questions about it, he's going to be getting the video cards next week some time, and is interested in going SLI. I was wondering if this power supply will be able to handle SLI, I think he was looking at 6600's or 6800's.

Thanks,

Jonny_5

Did you try using Fu3lman's Juice 1.0 PSU calculator?
See the Downloads Page.

Alright, if he sticks with one optical drive, he's at 408 watts with dual 6800 GT's. And a heavy overclock will put him in around 448 Watts, so it looks like the 450 watt supply should be able to handle his load.

Although once he adds all his USB devices he could get up to around 450 watts alone, so I'll have to recommend changing the power supply to a 550 when he wants to get into overclocking.

Thanks for the point in the right direction.

Edit: What do you guys think of that Sonata II case, I thought it rocked, it has a black duct that goes from ontop of the CPU to the back of the case. I use the original Sonata at work doesn't have the duct so I was surprised at the change.

That case is good, but its got issues fitting Hi-end cpu coolers, ( zalman CNPS9500, or TT BigTyphoon wont fit unless you mod the case )

Yeah I would imagine that you would need to mod the duct to be able to fit anything that's a little bit taller than the stock CPU cooler, it looked like there was about 1/2 an inch clearance. However I did notice that you can remove a piece of the duct to place another fan inside the duct to increase air flow.

Hey,

Looks like we're going to be purchasing the video card today what would you go with? Orginally he was thinking 6600's or 6800's and getting two of them in SLI mode, but I was thinking maybe just go with one 7800 GT for now, and then he can get the other 7800 later when the price comes down. Sound like a good recommendation?

If i read your spec's and your equation correct , you have a 450w psu and say that after everything is said and done your sittin' at 448w. Yes your under the 450w mark but unless i'm missin' something your not leaving much head room for growth and or any unexpected events. Just my .02 cents but i'd get a 500w or better just for piece of mind and future growth. It's always nice to have a good "buffer zone" .

Well if he only goes with the one 7800, it should be around 400 watts, so he'll have to upgrade to get the second one.

Edit: Unless I'm missing something entirely in which case somebody warn me I don't want to cause him system failure.

specs
-Sonata II w/ 450W SmartPower 2.0
-Asus A8N-SLI Premium w/ DualDDR400, 7.1 Audio, Dual GB Lan, 2 x PCI-E x16 SLI, Cool-Pipe
-Kingston HyperX 1GB PC3200 Dual Channel DDR Kit
-AMD Athlon 64 3500+ w/ 512K Cache (Retail Box)
-Pioneer DVR-110D DVD+/-RW Drive
-2 Maxtor 40 Gig hard drives (carry over from his old system for now)

picking up a evga 7800 GT 256MB card today
