Default RCA plugs wiring for fan power / Styrene/ABS plastic modeling

One of the things I'd like to do with my Untitled project is fashion some sort of easy quick connect/disconnect power plug for the fan I plan to put into the side window panel.

In the PC7 case, when you open or close the side panel, it goes in/comes out straight back/forward at first, then tilts outwards from the top, and you pull it up, out of the grooves... I was thinking of using something like an RCA plug, the male end wired to the fan cable, and the female end mounted to the inside front of the chassis...

Need some wiring advice, if anyone is somewhat more familiar than I am with this sort of thing...

Also, anyone with some experience in fabricating stuff with styrene/ABS plastics, I could use some help and/or advice with a mini fabrication project for the Untitled project as well... Basically, I want to build a false wall between the front intake fan and the back wall of the case, to hide all the cables and such. I thought of styrene/ABS because of its' weight and relative ease of use... Anyone?

Yeah, that's the idea, but in the case of the PC7, the side panel slides forward about 1/2" once you have the side panels' bottom grooves set on the bottom edge of the chassis...

That's why I was thinking about having the female plug (RCA or otherwise) inside the front edge of the chassis, and the male plug along the front edge of the side panel...

That's the idea, kinda... The fan would have the male RCA end, and the fan controller would have the female end.

I wish I had the PS skillz of some people around here, I could explain this with pictures so much better... It's just getting the visual I have in my mind down "on paper" that I really stink at...

Hey GN72 , let me give ya an idea an most likly a MIGRAIN at the same time . Why not make it like the contacts on a window alarm for home security systems , that way you wouldnt have to plug/unplug anything EVER . The wiring , i think , would be pretty stright forward, just 4 lil' metal tabs , two fer black an two for red . When ya slide the panel all the way on the tabs make contact and WAAAAALAAAA ya gots power to yer fan

i saw a mod somewhere where someone did that using telephone jacks. they attached the female end to the chassis and the male end to the sidepanel. they broke off the clip on the male end so that the connector could freely disconnect. i think that would work better than the rca connectors cause it only would need one pair of connecters and they would connect and disconnect more easily than the RCAs.

Yea i linked to that earlier in the thread. also the rca has two transfers, the internal pin and the external cap thing. Unless he has more than one fan on the side panel it should work.

The plan is for only one 120mm fan on the side panel. Thanks, MC&C, that drawing was spot-on... other than the fan being too far forward, but I'm not complaining...

Basically, I'm thinking that the black fan cable would be the ground or negative, and the red would be the "hot" wire. Now, with the RCA plug, check me on this:

The male end RCA plug: black to the middle post, red to the outer post (as per the second link that THRASHER put up), and then...

The female end would have the fan controller's wires set up the same (black to the inside, and red to the outside plugs)

or do I have this bass-ackwards?

The other guys have already adressed the fan connection idea. Sounds like you're all set.

What sort of help exactly do you need with the plastic wall idea?
ABS sheet is easily formed using a bit of heat, but usually in a fixture that uses a vacuum pump, heat and contour molds to get the sheet to conform. Pretty much how a lot of interior car parts are made.
Depending on the shape you want, you may be able to skip all that and use a much simpler technique. There are lots of material options as well.
Composite fab is what I do for a living, so ask away. Maybe you can make a dimensioned sketch of what you need and I'll just make it for you...

The news on this end isn't so good, folks... I've got tasked with helping run a range for a bunch of VIPs to get an intro the advanced marksmanship techniques, and I leave tomorrow, don't get back until Friday... I'll be "off the grid" until then...

Thanks to all for the great ideas (even the ones that gave me a migraine )... I'll hit you guys back up when I get back... Now, it's off to get all my gear packed up and ready for an oh-dark-thirty link-up with the rest of the detail...

Well, when you come back, here is another idea.

If you go to a local hobby shop, particularly one that has doll house building materials, you will find copper tape that they use for wiring in the doll houses. One side is insulated with tape the other is exposed, so you could easily make the sliding contacts you thought of.

Or use AL Foil Tape (or just AL foil with Tape on the back)

yeah it would work but make sure to cover the srounding area withtape or something. but as for a shock its only 12 or 5 volts won't hurt won't kill you if anything you could hardly feel it
