Default memory question

I'm going to buy a couple sticks of pc3200 today and was wondering if i put this in with my two sticks of pc2700 will my new stick's performance be limited at all? Or will those 2700 sticks be surplus for what my new 3200 memory doesn't handle? Sorry but i've never known much about i/o for memory; or much about system memory at all for that matter. Thanks for any help.

The 3200 and 2700 numbers are ratings that correspond to memory speeds of 200MHz (DDR400) and 166MHz (DDR333), respectively. If you run it all together, it should run everything at 166MHz. If you run the pc3200 by itself, it may be able to run at 200MHz, depending on your motherboard.

What make and model is your motherboard? And how much memory are you upgrading from/to?

from what i know, your pc3200 memory will run at pc2700 memory speeds if you combine the two

na that's what i was worried about. I was thinking that would happen. I'm running a intel 2.8e on a asus p4p800-dlx. So my best bet looks like just plopping in my new sticks. Also, i think i have a 512mb stick of 3200 lying around, if i threw my new sticks in dual channel, and plopped that generic 512 stick in, do you think there would be a noticeable performance increase over just plopping in all 1.5gb? Thanks for the help guys.

Pretty soon, you find you have enough extra usable parts to put together a spare rig. Or trade someone for something else you want..

BTW, what memory are you getting? Any links? Here's some good stuff in my opinion:

Crucial Ballistix 1GB PC3200 Stock Timings: 2-2-2-6

Maybe you'll consider it...

oh also, does this mean they will all operate with the same timings? And considering that's probably the case, do you think i would be better off running the 1gb of ocz gold in dual channel, or running the 1.5gb of mixed pc3200 at slightly higher timings?
