at the risk of sounding like a total n00b . . .

Why would someone want to do this?

I'm genuinely curious.

lol, NOOB j/k . I for one did this so that i have a psu set up for testing fans and such its actually very convienent to have a psu set up like this and plugged in. When i want to test a fan or opticalk drive to see if it ejects or HDD for power up, i flip the switch on the back of my tester psu and BAM i got power. No need to open a case or anything.

Damn right!!
Great for leak testing watercooling gear too (so I've heard) and HEAPS cheaper than those fancy-pants plug things

but yeah - tape it off

I have to agree as well......
I did this on a cheap power supply to bleed all the air out of my watercooling system without turning it on.

Now you tell me. I just recently threw away a psu from the case I am modding. I wanted to use it for the same purposes as you state above. This happened before I joined (or even knew of) pimp rig. Most of my searches warned not to play around with jumping the supply. I knew it could be done I just got tired of searching and having a useless psu sitting around so I tossed it.

I've got the older ps's non atx that has a switch you flick and it works no, jumping needed.

Pimp rule #296: Never throw away computer parts

Seriously though, I keep an old 200W PSU sitting around rigged up like this all the time for testing things like fans and lights, and also to check my wiring on a switch before I install it in my rig.

i found it 1st try =)

did search on: turn on power supply without motherboard

1st hit:
ATX Power Supply Wiring
As you know, the ATX power supply will not turn on normally without a motherboard
connected to it. There are times when you may want to test an ATX power ...

Just a tip for you guys, make sure to have a load on the PSU when you start it up this way. Having no load can kill cheap power supplies when they are turned on this way.

I'm thinking about doing this on one of the mods I'm planning to run the CCFLs and whatnot (gotta look icy ) and modding the PSU to look like a zamboni (any ideas about my mod theme? Go Preds!)

is it always green and black wires or does it change from PSU to PSU

I just got an OCZ PowerStream 600 and I'd like to power it up, but it has a 24 pin ATX connector so would I still short the green and black?
