Default Secondhand scanner for Vista x64

I made the switch today.

I was actually surprised how well Vista x64 did in driver support-- the LS-120 worked, the TV card worked, even HWMonitor to read my GPU temperature worked.

The only casualty was my Canon D1230U scanner. No drivers. I knew that going in.

I need a scanner maybe one day a month-- so the D1230U was more than ample. I paid like $20 for it used, so I don't want to spend a lot for a replacement.

All I really need is 600dpi, colour, USB, letter-size.

The local secondhand shops are packed with old scanners, presumably discarded when they buy an all-in-one printer.

I'd get one, but it's an utter crapshoot. In fact, I DID try one (a HP 6300c), only to discover HP's Vista support even worse than Canon's. No drivers, 32- or 64-bit.

So can anyone suggest model numbers they know are supported to keep an eye out for?

I do not want an all-in-one ink-vampire. I have a LaserJet 5 for printing (ooo... that's supported too!). I do not need a device that they'll probably stop supporting the moment they invent a new model with smaller ink cartridges that cost more.

How about saving your money and dual boot, just log into 32bit OS once a month when you need the scanner...

Well, I hate kludges. That's half the reason I don't go Linux on this box, something always doesn't work.

And how does activation play into things if I dual-boot 32- and 64-bit Vista?

Why did you downgrade to Vista? It's like XP's prettier sister who has a secret junk food addiction and hates foreign people.

Foreign people? People in general you mean

Anyway, maybe you should get an all-in-one and just NOT PRINT WITH IT if you can find one at the right price ....

I got a free copy.

I've heard bad things about AIOs-- supposedly some of them will refuse to do ANYTHING if you don't keep the ink cartridges sufficiently filled, and I'd expect them to 1) install horrible shovelware apps to handle their nine non-scanner functions and 2) may not be supported hugely long-term.

With printers, there are a few "tanks" which will be supported to the end of time due to their corporate install base-- like the Laserjet 3/4/5. Was there such a comparable for scanners? I browsed the driver list and didn't see that many to choose from, right out of the box, but maybe others have downloadable drivers.
