| For a while now the wireless in our house hasn't been working. My parents are getting antsy and would like to be able to use wireless but I wanted to see if I could get the current setup working before we blew ~$200-$300 on 2 routers. Our setup consists of: 1x Cisco 3560-8PC: Downstairs in a closet. All the ports are occupied but when I did a little experimenting not all of them are live. Supposedly we have a fiber optic connection in our house but I dunno whether that's true or not.2x Aironet 1130AG series Access Points: One for each floor. They light up but as far as I can tell don't do anything else. They broadcast a wireless signal which I can connect to but there's no internet. If I plug them into a different port in the closet where the router is they still don't work. x3Is anybody here even remotely familiar with this stuff? I'm way out of my league but I'm not all adverse to mucking around with it. | ||

| Have you tried resetting the power to everything. You didn't mention anything about a modem. You said fiber optic, which I don't know about. But I'm thinking you still need a modem. Otherwise your ISP would have no way of knowing who you are and if your paying your bill. When you find the modem you'll want to reset the power to it also. Edit: You've been swapping cables around. Make sure the cable from the modem is plugged into the port labeled WAN on your switch (downstairs in a closet). Last edited by Slaymate; 19-January-08 at 03:22 PM. | ||

| Okay, so it looks like the fiber comes in through that large white box and goes to the Cisco swith. That has Ethernet coming out of it to the patch panel with runs to, I assume, each room in the house. The other pic I assume is the Aironet access point connected to one of the runs back to the switch? First thing to do is reset everything. Next step is to make sure the runs to the Aironet access points are good by either connecting to them over the wired network or connecting a laptop to the port and making sure you get a connection. If the connection is good, go into the configuration for the Aironet. You will need to set teh SSID and WEP or WPA security. THen from the laptop with the wireless you will need to configure the same things on the wireless configuration in Windows, the SSID and security key. That should do it. ![]() | ||

| Wow, i wish my network was that clean, DAMN. I also wish i had that equipment. Did i mention D-Link is handing out free switches??? Yea found it on there support page the other day, a business is required, which i have one. w00t w00t... Yea my simple netgear umanaged gigbit switch, and my two 5 port linksys hubs, all along side my linksys wrt (first one that came out). Whoo, you have a buetiful setup, even compared to my tech schools. | ||

| It'd be a lot sweeter if it made sense :< Thanks for the reply DN. I attempted to try what you said but I couldn't find a reset button on either the AiroNet or the Router. Would unplugging and plugging the router do the same thing? Secondly the Aironet isn't actually connected to the router. It's labled as if it does but after checking every connection neither of our two Aironets are connected to the router. No idea what they're connected to. Any ideas or am I outa luck? | ||

| this may seem like a dumb question, but I don't believe you said if you can connect to the internet with a wired connection. can you? about the reset button: I don't believe a lot of equipment other than SOHO routers have reset buttons on them. there's a Cisco catalyst in my room, and it doesn't have a reset button. unplugging it, then plugging it back in should only restart it, not reset it. check the back of your Cisco 3560 for a console port. a console port looks like an Ethernet jack (an RJ45 jack). you can connect a console cable to this jack (if yours has one) and the other end of the console cable usually connects to a serial port, and telnet into the device and configure it that way. if I remember correctly, there is usually a reset option available. also, do you what ISP you have. I haven't heard of one that doesn't require a "client-side" modem of some sort. from what I could find, your switch does not support network address translation; if this is true, and you don't have a modem, that means your ISP would have to assign IP addresses to your nodes, which seems kind of sketchy to me. and that is a very nice setup you have, there Last edited by Fire Hawk; 20-January-08 at 01:05 PM. | ||

Yup I can connect via a wired internet connection without any problem. There is a console port but there is no cable. Technically my ISP is Qatar Telecomunications; basically government internet. Vodophone is supposed to be coming here soon but since we're living in government housing we're restricted to government internet.

| IM not sure if you've already seen these pages, but if you haven't they might help Cisco Aironet 1130 AG Series Configure - Cisco Systems I think starting with the Configuration Examples and TechNotes would be best | ||

It's really not necessary at all. But apparently whoever built these houses decided to call up Cisco to network them. So there are now 4000+ houses with this kinda setup. More money than sense really. :S Yes there is somebody we can call and I have called him before. You know when you call tech support in the states and you get that guy who doesn't speak English? Well his dumb ass dad whose never touched a computer is our tech support. ![]()

Ouch. Yea it does seem a little overboard, but it would be nice to have nonthe least. Most cisco routers have a power switch on them, thus just flipping it resets the device. Although I don't know much about there home products. One thing, I would trace the wire that you have wired internet on, figure out where the net is coming from, then connect a wire from that place, to the aironet. Can you connect to console on the cisco (hyperterminal) if you don't know how, I can easily walk you through it, but you may need a crossover, or a serial to ethernet cable. The console might be the easiest way to configure it, if you are a geek, that doesn't have to have a GUI. But if it has a nifty GUI that makes things uber easy, you could always take that route. From the pics, if seems you have a patch link for seperate rooms, and a wire coming from that going to the Aironet. All originating from the swicth, which gets it from the modem thingmabob. It's terribly neat, and I would love to have my whole house wired like such. Where do you live?

It seems like that would be your problem there. Have you tried plugging the Aironets into an Ethernet cable that you are sure works, like one you use for your computer now? That would make clear whether the problem is router side or Aironet side.
