Default Building A New System : Tell Me What Ya Think

Intel C2D 6850
Asus P5k Deluxe Wi-Fi
Corsair 520HX PSU
Antec 900 Case
Seagate Barracuda 320 Gig HD
Thermalright 120 Ultra HSF

I havent picked out the ram yet. As you can see I assembled a PC that I would be happy with at stock. Im stumped at the ram. Does a computer expierience big enough gains in real time when using high end ram as opposed to standard ddr 800 ram? Should I just stick with 4 gigs of ram with a low latency or should I get 2 gigs of high end ram?

What ram do you suggest? Keep in mind that i dont feel like spending over 300 on ram. Also tell me what you think about the rest of the pc.

Oh and if you have a good online store to buy these parts, hit me up too, lol, Newegg is getting a bit too expensive.

Thanks!

Well in reality you probably won't notice a big difference. If you're going to be benchmarking or overclocking and always looking for that extra point then yes it can make a difference.

This is an excellent set of RAM especially for the price and will be just fine for everything--you'll even be able to overclock with it, if you want.

As for an online store I stick with Newegg because of the fast shipping and good service. If you want to save some money though you could always try ChiefValue.com - shopping, buy Computer parts and accessories, ipod accessories, collectable toys and model kits. It's a subdivision of Newegg but for some reason offers things cheaper. You could also switch out that E6850 for an E6550 or an E6750.

Also what kind of graphics card are you going to use?

All in all it looks like a nice build.

I would get a Q6600 over an E6850. E6750's are much better value though, at least in the UK as there £60 cheaper! Get Crucial Ballistix 800MHz I believe its $80 on newegg AR.

Im not sure on the GFX card. Im really thinking of getting a cheapo card for now and holding off to see what exact performance a dx10 game needs.

You think I should swap the processor.. why?

Any reccomends for a cheap card to get me by till I need to upgrade?

Zal - Why do you think I should get a quad core instead?

Well if you want to wait be prepared to wait until Nov/Dec. for the next gen graphic cards. I'm not sure what you mean by cheapo but the common recomendation is an 8800GTS. The 320mb version runs around $260 I think. If you want to go cheaper you can always go for a 7900GS or a x1900GT for around $100 with some careful looking.

The only reason I recomeded swapping the processors was because you mentioned wanting to save some money.

As for quad core---Right now you can get a Q6600 for $266. The preformance is slightly slower than the dual core because of it's lower clock speed but it offers a lot more future proofness, and it can easilly be overclocked to 3Ghz and higher without much trouble.

Cool. I went and did some reading and I think I will change to quad core. Anyhow, the reason why I wanted to save a lil money here and there is college lol. But I am prepared to make a bit of a sacrafice. I would rather buying a cheap gfx then buying a mid range high range card only having to upgrade again. I would rather upgrade the gfx in a year when the next gen crysis games come out.

Alright man thanks! What ram do you reccommend if I am planning on ocing a q6600

It depends on how much you want to overclock. If you just want to do some basic stuff or nothing at all just about any set of RAM will be fine. If you want to go hardcore you'll want to look at getting some high end OCZ or Corsair RAM.

K I will get 80 dollar ram for now and then if I need better ram I will upgrade later.

Only thing I'd add is a Western Digital HD. I like things quiet and the WD drives are typically quieter and create less vibrations from my experiences.

Money isnt an issue, quality is what Im looking for. I guess what I would ideally want to spend islike 300. But if I can get equal quality and save then thats a plus.

At that price level you're looking at a 22" monitor. I personally like the Samsung 226BW because it's so damn sexy (picture isn't bad either) but there are plenty others that are good as well. Gennerally HP and Dell's monitors are good, as are Samsung's. Viewsonic's are pretty good as well. You could also (if you want to spend a bit more) get 2 22" Acer monitors. Best Buy has got them for $189 each right now.

If you keep your computer for more than six months, you will start to notice the difference. Also the Q6600 will easily overclock to 3GHz if you just want the faster stock speed.

I've got an 22'' LG L226WTQ and it's a very nice screen. You might be able to find it cheaper than the Samsung as I did, but I'm pretty sure they use the same panel.

I hate to give Best Buy money about as much as WalMart, but sometimes you can't pass up a deal, hmmmmm. I suppose I could live with the Acer splash screen(s).

So the 226 is sexy, with good picture.

Whats overall best value for the buck. Does the sexy looks warrant the extra spending? Is the picture quality beatable by another 22 "?

In it's price range it's the best but if you're looking for best price/preformance that Acer is the best. From what I've heard the colors arn't the greatest but otherwise it's an excellent monitor. That being said I've had my heart set on the Samsung ever since I saw it so....

I like the Samsung, it is pretty nice.
However, for a comparable price or lower you can get a more "feature full" monitor. They each have their own niceties about them, like the:
BenQ FP222WH having DVI and HDMI as well as D-Sub
SCEPTRE X22WG-1080p sporting a 2000:1 contrast ratio and a 2ms access time to go with D-Sub and DVI
Hanns·G HW-223DPB having DVI/D-Sub along with a 4-port USB hub and 1000:1 contrast ratio
LG L226WTY-BF (the most expensive) but supports D-Sub/DVI(HDCP), best of the group 3000:1 contrast ratio, and a 2ms access time

Of course, you can probably find these cheaper if you look around but the best price/performance to me is the above Hanns-G and/or Sceptre. If money were no object for this group I would go with the LG.
