| Apex Advanced Techie | I am obviously looking for a CPU in prep of building my new sys as my old sys, which I built in 03', is on its last legs. I like to, when I am building, start with the heart of the beast and work outward and since I have been out of step with the tech I woul apprecaite the advice. I am looking for something that will get me a head of the tech curve and serve well for a good span. I was looking at the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 but with the recent news of the bugs in it that even the update/patch won't fix (or this suspected) I wonder if it is still worth it? Also of course is the AMD side which at first I wanted to go with but I have heard a lot of complaints about price and performance slipping , i.e Intel is faster for cheaper price etc... I don't know if I should go with it and if so what would be the best (top line) model to go with? Anything you all can give me to help me choose/guide me on my way would be great. Cheers | |

| Definatly go with Intel. The bug is a minor thing and should be fixed. If you wait until the end of July I believe the prices on Intel's processors are going to drop dramatically which would make a quad core a great buy. As for AMD.....they seem to be in the sh****. Their newest offering hasn't come out yet and the early preformance numbers don't seem to be nearly as competitive as they need to be. To put it simply buy that QX6700 (or better yet a Q6600) at the end of july and save a ton of money while getting a crap load of preformance. | ||

| Apex Techie II | The Q6600 is a very sweet processor, runs lightning fast on vista ultimate 64 bit. I have yet to see the CPU usage go above 27% while gaming or running 3DMark which means lots of headroom for the future. Runs very cool too 23 idle 32 load W/zalman cooler. | |

Spending more than 200-300$ on a cpu for most people is silly when you break it down by performance per dollar, especially if you factor a mild OC in the mix...you won't find any 12MB cache YorkFields in that price range till well into 08 (The 266$ 8MB cache Q6600 seems to hit an easy 3ghz+ and the price drop for it is due July 22.) Gabe from Valve is saying that some new updates for Steam are aimed specificly at Quads, and will have a noticeable impact on near future games.
