Default QX6800 too hot?

The new Quad Core QX6800 from Intel doesn't come with a fan obviously because the processor is too hot for them to handle. I was reading some reviews on newegg about it and I wonder, can a fan handle the beast or is it all about liquid cooling nowadays?

I'd say a fan would be OK as long as it's a really decent one. Something in the category of a Big Typhoon or a Scythe. But if you were going to OC, water cooling all the way!

The QX6800 does come with a fan - but only on the retail models.

The one on Newegg is an OEM (AKA "white box") model - which is why there's no fan.
Because of this, it comes with a reduced warranty from Intel as such.
(In NZ, the retail versions that ship with fans have 3 years usually as opposed to 12 month for the OEM ones)

But yeah, the OEM ones are a fair bit cheaper

As far as aircooling goes - Thermalright 120, big Typhoon or a Noctua 120 will fit the bill perfectly!

They run on air pretty nice i would say, I am visiting $SOLID$ Necro and we have gotten the QX6800 to run 3912MHZ all on air, with some realy nice temps too.

They don't run all that bad really, the thermal output is very low compared to the average CPU. just a little higher than your avergae Core duo.
