Default What's the deal with the 6800 these days?

I was just wondering what was up with the 6800 these days.....they's still selling for extremely high prices for a two-generations-old card and I noticed that a few of the high-rankers in the video benchmarks here are still using the good old 6800. Are these cards still an okay performer for the money? How do you guys get up there with such an old card?

Go buy an 8800GTS. DX10 performance and it'll blow the 6800 away.

Yeah, or even a 7800. 7800 is basically a 6800 core that runs much cooler.

Jesus I need to upgrade I have my x1600 pro 256mb. Still gets me the headshots.

Get what gets you the headshots, I was powning nublets in HL on a 3dfx Voodoo 5 when everyone else had Radeon 9xxx cards. Get what works for you.

Although he is right. Get the 8800gts. DX10 performance and it will rape the 6800.

The 6800 series of cards were replaced with the 7800 series really quickly. There were heat issues with the old core and in many circumstances, there were entire batch failures.

The ones you are seeing are old stock that was bought from the manufacturer/distributor at a high price. They haven't sold or had a long enough lifespan to incur cheaper manufacturing (read: price drops)

They still perform very well - but there's better out there for an equivalent price

I'd expect people are hoping for high prices on the 6800 because the only AGP nVidia-based 7xxx cards are either rare (7800GS) and expensive, or only medium-performance (7600GS)

Tru that on the heat issues, I had a bfg 6800ultra with a huge monolithic water block on it and it still got warm.

Funny thing is, I think I sold it for right at what I payed for it lol.

I would say if you are not going to vista and dx10 any time soon 7800GTX is your best bet. That is what I am running now and it stills runs all my games smooth enough to enjoy. Even did well with Supreme Commander at max settings.

I'm still running 2 6800's in SLi (the 12 pipeline version, not the 16) and they are definitely showing their age in newer games.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.

I wasn't debating buying one, that's obviously a crazy move when they are selling for $200+ still. I actually took one of the good old BFG 6800 Ultra OC cards off my friend for $100 due to his upgrade cycle and me being a very casual gamer.

What I'm talking about is results like this, provided by HWbot:

10. $SOLID$ Necro - 12570 marks - dual GeForce 6800 Ultra @ 480/1300mhz - Opteron 146, GeForce 6800 Ultra

This result is ahead of a whole lot of dual X1900 series and 7900 series cards, and the difference can't be accounted for by the processor because the opty 146 is a very modest cpu these days. Can someone pull Solid in here and make him explain!?

Thats because of the guy who clocked them, not the cards themselves, they do run hot, but not in the winter time....

He's very good at overclocking and those are his twins, he still won't sell them to me...

Well...take a 6800GT Bios (Uses tighter RAM timings) up the GPU voltage to 1.5v using NBITOR (1.4 stock) then optimise the ram and Bios to razor sharpness (Bh-5 at DDR540+ at 2-2-2-7) and then tweek the OS within an inch of it's life.

I also used the STOCK BFG coolers, but made the fans run at 100%, and had AS-5 under them.

Oh, and running it in the middle of winter when the outside Ambient temps are at below 0(F)

After a bit more tweeking and tuning...I was able to make it to the top ten in April 05 in 3DMARK 05 (7th Place @ 11880) these results were from my first test run in March, good enough for page 1 at that particular time.

The 12.5 K result was done at a much later date, using a higher clocking Opty 146 instead of the 4000+, new drivers, and a few other tweeks I learned over time.

What he isn't telling you is about the small nuclear reactor he has hooked up to it, either. Those boys over at the DoE NNSA have been hunting for his illegal power plant for ages and still haven't gotten anything on him yet.

Anyone else hear a loud pop? Like a new guys head imploding. I think you scared him... or he might be too busy bowing to the master.
