Default The death of a PSP

So my PSP got bathed in some very tasty cream soda entirely by accident a couple weeks ago. I turned it off ASAP and left it that way for a couple days, and dried off what I could externally. I went to turn it on, and thanked the gaming gods that it powered on. Buttons are sticky, but the hardware seems to be just fine.

However, the problem came when I put in a UMD. It made the most gawd-awful churning sound in my life, which I could only assume to be the reader being sticky with syrupy residue. Not buena.

So now I have a choice. I can probably disassemble and clean the hardware by hand, thus saving my PSP. Or I can take this opportunity to say farewell to a used and abused old friend who has seen a lot of battle (and has the dings and scratches to prove it), trade in my modest pile of PSP games, and take a little out of my next paycheck for a DS Lite (which would be catering to my Nintendo/Sega fanboyism and my recent loathing of Sony).

So what do you guys think? Lay her to rest, or attempt to resurrect?

Its risque, but you could try this...

Throw the thing in water and let it sit for a bit so the stickiness can become liqufied. Then after ample time, take it out and submerge it in a tub of rice, yes rice. The rice will absorb the moisture with the stickiness in it (Hopefully)

Let it sit for a day or two and try it again.

I don't know if I would submerge it again. I'd open it up and clean it with rubbing alcohol and a few q-tips.

I would say at this point......mod it. Get on CFW and you wont need your UMD drive anymore. Of course I cant talk about how or where to do to do this process but if your curious look me up.

How about soaking it in distilled water with rice? That should make it considerably safer. Or you could just mod it like Phlak said

This should've been done on the first day he got it.

Instead of submerging it in anything just give the insides a few good squirts of naptha lighter fluid.

Well, regardless of the questionably legal things that may or may not be done to the poor thing, it still needs to be cleaned.

Psh, I got mine way back at launch, and I was (and still am, basically) a newbie as far as doing things to game systems that their designers might frown upon. Was going to do things to it, but, long story short, 3.0 firmware is mean, and a copy of Lumines is both difficult to find and expensive considering it's age.

Something about submerging sensitive electronics in water, distilled or otherwise, just seems, I dunno.... At least, not as a whole.

Surgery is tentatively scheduled for some time tomorrow afternoon, pending any appointments I may have forgotten. :geek:
