Default Help with creating this effect in Photoshop please . . .

I curious how I may be able to reproduce this effect using photoshop.

This is the album cover for the Talking Heads album "Remain in Light".

I'm guessing it would be rather simple but, any input or suggestion would be great!!

Any help would be very appreciated!!

What the covered faces or the upside down letters? Either way photoshop can do this and Paint can too.

The text is no problem, I'm looking for a VERY authentic reproduction of the faces, specifically the masking and it's tone. Also the unmasked parts of the faces (which I'd imagine I could obtain by playing with the channels).

I don't know, I'm just looking for some suggestions on how to pull of this effect VERY convincingly.

TIA.

I'm confused. Are you trying to add the red face covering to other pictures of people? If so you can just use magic wand to select it then copy.

It's just a low resolution image, (hence the blocky outlines) with a mass selection via the wand tool, coloured red. To get the right flesh tones I suggest using Curves and Colour Balance (Image>Adjustments).

Thanks for the help so far!!

From what I can see the actual photos of the faces are not low-res, only the "red-marker masks" are low-res, creating that blocky, aliased look to the edges.

mc&c has a good idea of simply selecting the "red-marker masks" using the magic-wand and then copying to the destination image but I'd prefer to design a brush or something like that so I could apply the effect to anything, not just photo portraits.

I'm doing this for a design project at my school and I have to design a label for a juice bottle. Instead of the faces, I'm going to replace each one with a different type of fruit. IE: David Byrne's photo will be replaced with the icon of a bunch of grapes, Jerry Harrison's face will be replaced with the icon of an apple, Tina Weymouth's face will be replaced with a slice from a watermelon and Chris Frantz' face will be replaced with the icon of three cherries with their stems connected.

The types of fruit may vary but, the overall concept will remain the same.

I feel like the whole "design a juice label" thing is pretty lame but, it is a rather practical "real-life" project that I could encounter once I enter the professional design world.

Thank you for your continued assistance!!

Are you doing Graphic Design then? I'm doing it for BA, hopefully continuing to masters. You're right about lameness, I have had a hell of a lot of lame projects lately. But anyway, back to business...

I'm not sure how much you know about Photoshop, but you can create brushes pretty easily. Just select the texture you want, and then go to Edit>Define Brush Preset and hey presto...

Brushes look proper good if you mask 'em - ie create areas of alternating transparency and colour just like you would if you were using masking tape on a painting. Have a play with them (Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal/Hide All).

Additionally, if you want you can download photoshop brushes. Personal favourites of mine are from Illustration, Poster Art, Flyer Art & Band Art... with a twist of lemon : Angryblue and Photoshop Brushes - Grunge Brushes - Photoshop Tutorials. To install, simply place the .ABR file into C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Presets\Brushes.

Hope this helps

I was playing around today and made me a mask brush from it. It's pretty cool actually you can resize it w/ brush size, and rotate it, flip it. etc.

Here it is if this is what your talking bout. Just open w/ photoshop select all then Edit>Define Brush Preset like reflux said.

Thanks for the help guys. If I like the results I'll post them up here so you can see.

The final end product, once approved by my instructor, I'll scan and throw up here if I remember.

Thanks again for the help!!
