From Camcorder to DVD

I have had this dilemna for a few years now. I have a Sony digicam TRV-17 and I know how to burn movies to DVD however, I always get quality loss.
Is there a proggie out there robust enough to make good quality home movies to DVD ?
Or is it not teh software thats the problem but my gear ????
I am connecting the digicam to Comp then I can watch it on comp and it looks great but when I burn it to dvd the it looks like a woody allen movie to me... crappy.
any help in this 3 year old dilemna would be much appreciated it would be great if we could hook up on MSN or somthing to walk and talk me through this, k, thx !

The program we use is video capture not conversion, and it makes it crisp. Can't find the disk to get the name, but as soon as I do I will post it up. The camera though is a JVC DV camcorder, and the software came with it.
