| | Subdismal's "Realistic Tape" Tutorial I've procrastinating doing this, but I will do that no longer. So, here it is: SUBDISMAL'S "REALISTIC TAPE" TUTORIAL - Create a new document. Size really doesn't matter, but I will be using a 400x400 canvas.
- Create a new layer above the background layer. Using the Polygonal Lasso tool [L]. Create a diagonal selection the size you want your tape to be. Fill in your selection with gray [#818181]. Select the Opacity of the layer to 50%.
- Using the Polygonal Lasso tool again, to create the look of torn edges as if the tape had been ripped from the dispenser. Cut off jagged parts of the tape at both corners, randomizing your selections.
- Grab your Burn tool from the toolbar pallette [O]. Set the Range of the Burn tool to 'Highlights' and the Exposure to between 9-12%. Draw down the middle of the image to give it the look of not being completely flat.
- While still having the Burn tool handy, go around the edges of the tape. Go along the side, keeping it close to the edge but not completely the same all the way around. Also, go around the torn edges. This will give you depth around the corners, so it's not so flat looking.
- Apply your tape to the corner of an image. Do this by copying an image and placing it in your working image (Ctrl.+C to copy, Ctrl.+V to paste your image). Move the image layer under your tape layer.
- To create a duplicate of the tape you've just created so you may put it on the opposite side or whatever you wish, hold Ctrl. and click on the layer containing the tape and hit Ctrl.+C (to copy your selection) and then paste your selection using Ctrl.+V. Pasting a copy of your selection will automatically put it on a new layer. Since you had blending changes done to your tape to make it look the way we made it, you need to apply the same style to your copied tape. So, change the opacity to 50% again.
- Experiment with different colors, if you desire. You can use the Ctrl.+U (Hue/Saturation Change) to change the color of the tape. Use your artistic ability to create something unique. This is what I came up with:
Note: Since this is my first written tutorial, if there are parts that you or you think someone else cannot follow, please let me know. Also, if you choose to to do this tutorial, please post your results! |
