| Aright, so I've been using Photoshop 6 for the longest time. I started on version 4, hated version 5 so stuck with 4, then 6 came out and I liked 6 and have been on it ever since. Photoshop 7 didn't impress me very much and it seemed like it was coming out right around when XP was first coming out and they started to go to that stupid hippy gel button look, plus I didnt like it's features....wasn't a big fan of of PS8 aka CS either as it didn't seem too different from 7....... So anywho I decided to get and try out Photoshop 9...seems basically like the others thus far, but my main question here is how to select an image in a certain layer......meaning in photoshop 6 you'd hold down CONTROL then click on the image and bam it selects JUST the outline of whatever the image is, so in otherwords if it was just text it would simply select just the outline of the text..........so I go to do this in 9 and low and behold holding CTRL then clicking the layer does absolutely nothing.....now they've made CTRL do nothing but enable you to select multiple layers like normal files within WinXP...... So, how do I go about doing the layer selection from 6 since it no longer works by using CTRL+Click layer | ||

| AntiM - All it does is literally highlight the layer, in Photoshop 6 when I'd hold control and then click the layer it would be the little 'ants' as some people call them crawling around the edges of whatever the image was.... For example check out this pic: ![]() See how the text is literally select around the edges? CTRL+Clicking the layer in PS6 would give me that....and it no longer works in CS2 ![]() Unless I'm misunderstanding what your directions are saying, all it's doing is highlighting the layer or layers, but I need the actual image in the layer to be outlined like in the pic above. EDIT: aright I figured out how to do it, but it's not quick like in PS6, or the fact I havent found the shortcut, but you select the marquee tool, right click on the image in the layer then select 'Load Selection" thats the effect I was looking for, but I hate the fact that Ctrl+Click doesn't work now | ||

| I think you'll find most of the old keyboard shortcuts are gone, not many were left in 6 anyway. You can always "control A" then grab with the move tool to outline an object. But if you want it to remain in position you'll have to load the transparency for the layer the way you did. Or nudge it with an arrow key one stroke one way and one stroke back. I agree, in Adobe's effort to make Photoshop more intuitive (which it really isn't) they gave up all the hidden shortcuts that could really speed things up. In 4 you could rotate a crop box very quickly with a modifier key, now you have to pull the cursor away from the object, wait for it to redraw into curved arrows and then rotate. | ||

| yeah but control A will just select the whole layer instead of going right around the edges of the images.......I mainly use it for when I want to use the outline of one object to then cut out that shape of another object.... bah stupid CS2........loading selection takes so damn long compared to just CTRL+Clicking the layer but nooooooooo now they've gotta make it so that Ctrl+click will select multiple layers, which is now the only way to merge layers since they got rid of the link icon........bastards | ||

Control A plus moving an object with the move tool will outline it as you want. You don't need the link tool anymore, just hold shift when clicking on multiple layers or click the little arrow on the layers pallete to group objects into a single "smart object". | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Apex Techie Wannabe | Unlike Photoshop CS and previous versions you now have to Ctrl click on the actual layer thumbnail itself in order to bring up its selection. This has allowed Adobe to implement their new multiple layer features which are actived by clicking on the layer. So all you have to do now is click on the actual thumbnail itself and Bob's your uncle. | |

| I think i can help. Follow the stuff below. (I'm guessing it's on a solid background) 1) have everything ready with what you want to select shown. 2) get your magic wand tool. 3) click on the background (not what you want to select but what you don't want to select). 4) right-click and click ( Select Inverse) There hope I help you. your object should be selected. ![]() | ||
