Question Web Design pay?

I've never done any sort of professional Web work for anyone. However, my new employer, a full service florist and planner, wants me to possibly design their Web site. It's going to be a fully functional, yet somewhat basic design. I've never had to price anything like this, so I don't want to sell my self short or try to overcharge, you know?

I can't see the site being more than ten pages, deep...with a somewhat basic design, with a gallery (PHP powered, of course), a few images, but mostly completely CSS driven.

I'm just wondering if you Pimps who have done any sort of professional Web design works could help me in pricing this job.

I just do a base price to develope the web-site and then when they want to update it I charge then hourly. I guess its what ever it is worth to you on what you want to charge them.

My sister is a professional web designer and she (her company) charges $1000 - $5000 depending on the size, complexity of the page. She also deals with pretty profesional people, so I'm not sure you would want to ask $1000 from a florist.

I'd say $250-$400. Charge $20-30 an hour it takes you to complete it.

I do some freelance web work on the side (I have a full time job programming websites). For most of my on-the-side work with big clients, I charge $50 an hour. But I'm subcontracting as a favor for a friend at the moment, making only $20/hour -- more for the unique experience that the project offers than for the money. I know some experts who charge $60-$75 an hour, and others who win bids by charging $40-$45. But those are people who make a living doing so. If you're just getting started and want to do someone a favor, those rates might be pretty high. I'd be inclined to agree with gorked about the hourly rate.

(By the way, sure, if a web consultant could work 40 hours a week at $50 an hour, s/he'd make $100K a year. But keep in mind they don't get paid at all for time spent marketing, looking for work, negotiating with a client, managing the business side, etc.)

If it helps, one of my friends gives rough overall price estimates on his site: Creative Data Works

$150-$500 for the site itself, and from $15-$30 an hour is what I charge, but I do basic stuff and I fudge my prices to get the deal.

$30/hour is great....

... I just need more than 2 hours week now.

Thanks for all the advice. You all have just compounded most of the things I had already thought about. I'll tell them the project is going to range anywhere from $200 to $400, depending on how much work I spend on it and how well I think it turned out (which I won't tell them, haha).

Anyway, I'll probably also negotiate with them a monthly fee for updating the site. Maybe $100 every month as a bonus for updating/maintaining it weekly? How does that sound?

Set up a plan, 2 hours of updates weekly or something. I didn't for my first long term thing and I worked for nearly nothing.

One thing you should make clear to the florist is that if you charge say $500 for the initial job. Updates and changes aren't included. Do the initial work and then go over it with them to tweak the few things they may want changed. But once the site is up and running make sure they understand new pages and functions will be extra. Your best bet is an hourly charge for doing updates, or a set rate. Whichever you feel more comfortable with. I've had people try and come back and get a weeks worth of work for free, just becuase they thought they could get away with it. Besides, the clearer you make things up front the better your business relationship with these people will go.

I charge similar to what FunkyFresh does... I do freelance graphic/website design as well as make tech support hosuecalls... I charge $50/hour as a base and adjust if I need to in order to get the gig.

If you are already employed by this florist and they are a small family run business, are they willing to pay you extra? Could be they may feel that you are already on the pay roll and not want to negotiate.

Will you be expected to do your normal duties and web design?

Have they shown willingness to pay extra on a contract basis?

IÂ’m all for making $$ for the talents you have. Just be sure you donÂ’t burn down the bridge you used to get the job you have.
