well. if you have created it in 72dpi, and just go image>image size. and change the dpi to 300, your quality (when printed) will look like total arse. all vector layers will scale correctly, so text and non rasterized layers will be ok. its best to start out with a canvas that is the right dimensions and resolution to begin with.

you might end up redrawing it at the higher resolution. is this for print? or is it just a project your teacher wants you do do to show you CAN make stuff for print?

yeah I pretty much just put it a new canvas on 300dpi and put the 72dpi image on the new canvas and stretch it out and used that as a trace to redraw it.

worked out nicely

Another option (if you have Photoshop) would have been to make paths from selections before changing resolution.

I would except I have never done it either. I just mentioned it because I read a tutorial on it a couple of weeks ago. I'll see if I saved the link and if so, post it from home.
But I did just get P'Shop 7 and it kicks mucho hiney compared to 5.5

Well, that isn't the one I read but teaches the same basic concept. Always better to have a path..... images look crisper and such.

Hey Rad, I brought home a P'Shop 7 book from work so I will do a write-up on converting selections to paths by this weekend sometime. Or more precisely, just plagiarize right out of the book.

ok here goes:

Converting selection borders to paths

Any selection made with a selection tool can be defined as a path.
The Make Work Path command eliminates any feathering applied to the selection. It can also alter the shape of the selection, depending on the complexity of the path and the tolerance value you choose in the Make Work Path dialog box.

To convert a selection to a path using the current Make Work Path settings:

Make the selection, and click the Make Work Path button at the bottom of the Paths pallette.

To convert a selection to a path and specify settings:

1. Make the selection, and do one of the following:

~ Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac) the Make Work Path button at the bottom of the paths palette.
~ Choose Make Work Path from the Paths palette menu.

2. Enter a tolerance value or use the default value in the Make Work Path dialog box.

Tolerance values can range from 0.5 to 10 pixels and determine how sensitive the Make Work Path command is to slight changes in the selection shape. The higher the tolerance value, the fewer the anchor points used to draw the path and the smoother the path. If the path is used as a clipping path and you have problems printing the image, use a higher tolerance value.

I hope that helps.

It's all good as long as you give credit where it's due, it's not plagiarizing, it's quoting.
