Default WinXP tweak question...

Ok, this one is for the OS tweaker pros.

I have an old P3 slot1 proc and accompanying intel mobo, 256Mb of SDRAM, 2 ATi 3D Rage Pros, an old Cisco wlan card, a 3com Ethernet card, a couple spare cd drives, and an old case. I also have a spare copy of Windows XP (that's legit) since I upgraded to 64-bit. Could this hardware run XP if it were slimmed down with some tweaking? Would getting a copy of 2000 be better suited?

I just wanted to turn all of this old tech into a more portable beater gaming rig. Do you think it possible? Or even worth while?

Yeah that machine can run XP no probs, use nLite to slim it down and remove all the bloat, then tweak it a bit with TuneXP, tunr off all the effects and use the windows 9x look and it should run quite well.

im no pro but w2k is almost as taxing as winxp on that type of hardware ....

you'd be better off installing Windows Fundamentals

because even if you slim down the "install options" on xp, the resources to run the whole OS will still be the same .... ( those cant be slimmed down) against those on WinFLP which incorporates a less demanding kernel ....

you forgot to mention what the speed on the CPU is

It should run fine.

Adding some extra ram would give it a boost, but those specs are above the MS mins.

and if thats a coppermine P3, all the better.

Gaming on it is another story though.

I'm thinking HL1 era for that hardware.

Oops ... the proc is a 500Mhz slot1 P3... so yeah, it's not blazing. But maybe I could OC it

So would using WinFLP be better, or just teaking a full copy? I've never tweaked before, so I might screw something up.

well WinFLP is designed precisely for "ancient" hardware .....
is not a stripped down XP copy .... but depends .... someone might be able to tweak an XP copy to work almost similarly

just put it this way .... when i had my p2 (266)i put winflp on and it ran like if it had win98 but with the reliability of xp

Ok, so my roommate and I were talking today, and he suggested running a distro of Linux. How well would Linux run on this old hardware?

Depends on the distro really. Debian "Sarge" would run fine on it with a lightweight window manager, Damn Small Linux would do fine, Slackware is another good bet (Although recent versions use KDE compiled for i386, so that might be a bit slow), Archlinux would run quite speedy, and Gentoo would be another speedy but time consuming choice. A lot of the newer "Mainstream" distros would actually be quite hardware intensive because of the default window managers they use would consume a good bit of memory.
