Default Linux?

Hi guyz, i want to know, what's linux for? is it for server use only? im thinking to use Linux for my next build. Is it compatible with AMD AM2?? can it run games like counter strike and such? i've been reading here, and i notice that people say Ubuntu is the easiest one to work for newbie.. and also, i've heard that linux pretty stable...

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Linux is for both server and desktop use. For a home user new to Linux, Ubuntu is the distro of choice.

Linux will work fine with AM2. Just verify your particular motherboard chipet is supported by Linux. Linuxquestions.org is a great place to find information about things like that.

Some games can be played on Linux using Cedega or WINE, but others can't. Cedega and WINE both have a good list of what games work with their software.

If you are new to Linux, it's best to start off by dual booting Windows and Linux just in case you need Windows for something,

two words.. .LIVE CDs until you're sure you wanna waste the time with daul boots just download whats called a live cd version. you burn it to cd, pop it in the cd drive load it and it boots right off of it. also his way you can make sure its compatible with all your hardware.
