Default Windows SlipStreaming Guide

Slipstreaming 101 (just the basics)

Tools needed:

Nlite
.Net Framework v1.1
Sp2 and ms hot fixes
Winrar
Windows xp cd
Blank cd/dvd
1.5 gb free disk space
Microsoft Virtual Server (free)

1. Download nlite:

http://www.nliteos.com/download.html

2. Download all service packs and hot fixes

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913086

3. Open Nlite

4. on 2nd screen Tell nLite where the windows cd is.

5. Tell Nlite where it can save the temp files to

6. You will see a import screen we can skip this page

7. Task Selection Screen, simple Choose what you need.. ( I will choose all for this guide)

8. Service pack integration screen. Skip this step if sp2 is all ready on your Xp cd. If not download Sp2 here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Just choose the select button and tell nlite where sp2 is located on your system. After you do that it will extract it and install it into the image on the spot

9. Hotfixes... pretty much same thing just tell nlite where the hotfixes are located on your system. If you don’t have the hotfix exe’s download them here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913086

These will be iso files. Once you have downloaded them, open the iso files with Winrar.

The hot fixes will be sorted by Os and language choose Xp and English

10. Drivers. Same thing applies just point to where they are on your system

11. Remove components screen . this is where you can thin down the os. There is a wizard to help you. But be careful as if you remove the wrong thing windows will not work.

There is a listing of what programs need to work in windows here:

Also things in red Are a must have!

12. Unattended Setup:

Its pretty easy to figure out:

Information tab:
Choose guiAttend mode and deselect the oem option

Administrator tab:
Put in your Name and Password you want to use

General Tab:
This is where you put the license key and you have some options on themes, turning on or off system restore and firewall options (and a couple more)

Network id tab:
Used for joining domains and workgroups and for setting the computer name. I would recommend putting in a workgroup name.

Network Settings:
Just keep things as default

Regional:
Lets you set country, language, timezone

Run once;
Used if you want to have a batch file run at the 1st boot (good for installing programs and such)

Display:
Lets you set screen size and number of colors, refresh rate

Components:
Lets you set up iss and scw recommended to leave at default.

Automatic Updates:
Lets you turn them on and set time when to run

Remember any options you don’t set you will be asked during the install

13. Options:

This will allow you to set up options (like install path for windows) and also you have the ability to change the mode windows services start in (very useful)

14. Patches:

Tcip patch: I recommend between 50 to 100

Usb port polling: Leave at default unless you have a gaming mouse

Unassigned themes support: you want this enabled if you do 3rd party window themes

Sfc: Leave this enabled it saves your butt more times then what you think from spyware

15. Tweaks:

You can play with what you want to tweak.. most are safe so have fun

16. Iso Creation:

Once you hit yes.. it will make the iso file! And you are done!

17. TESTING!!!!

You will want to test the image before burning it.. I suggest downloading Microsoft Virtual server http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...e/default.mspx

And use the iso file to install it..

Have any questions? Please let me know!
