| I remember reading something about this a few moons ago, and I thought I copied it down into my repository of knowledge, but apparently I didn't. Situation: Windows XP machine will only open up X# of windows of any type, IE, explorer, email, etc.... Once you've reached your max # of handles (doubt that's the right word, but it seems right), you cannot open another window until you've closed one of your prior ones. If I remember correctly, it had to do not with the amount of system memory, but the number of handles in some small subset of memory, and it was a type of ratio where if you increased the number of handles available, each one was forced to use less memory. Conversely, if you decreased the number of handles, each one could be more robust. But I can't remember where I saw it, and I sure could use the info here at work. Rep to the first person who helps me find that article/info. | ||

| isnt it 51 ???? I presume it is a consequence of the size of data structures that were inbuilt in the code of explorer because after that 1 needs to be closed in order for another one to open .... and this has nothing to do with the page file since mine is auto. handled by windows and it decreases/increases as more resources are used. i set mine at around 348 with 1 window open and after 50 it was around 4608 | ||

Well the thing is..After you use up all the Physical Ram, wont windows start using HDD Space? So then the Number of windows open is practically infinite.

You would think that, and yes if each window was opening to something w/little to no information, you can open a huge number of windows. But something that Fortran said jarred some things in my head. It said something that it didn't matter how much physical RAM or swapfile size you had, something in memory would only allow this X# of handles to work. It's bugging the living mess out'a me. When I get home I'll look in my archives to see if I have it there. If so, I'll post it. If not, will just keep looking.
