reinstall windows?

My Dad's comp won't boot, well actually it does sometimes then crashes if you run anything then won't boot. He has gotten the well known error C:\windows\system32\config\sytem. I ran chkdisk and found he has a lot of unreadable segments, but that didn't fix his problem. So i tried to use the repair in dos but the first file i went to copy i got "this file does not exist". Now i'm stuck. Could it be a hardware problem like his ram overheating or something and that's why it can boot after sitting a while, but then crashes or does he have to reinstall Windows XP.

Try going into msconfig and disabling everything... then try restarting a few times... sometimes a new line in the boot.ini, Sys.ini or Win.ini can cause issues. Also, have you tried seeing if it'll boot into safe mode successfully?

If it still encounters errors, try running scandisk... see if there are bad sectors on his hard-drive...

If scandisk comes back clean (so you know it's not a hardware issue with the HDD)... I'd try backing up his files on the next successful load... then reload the O/S and power-test that sucker with a high resource program (like a game)... make sure it' s not going to do it again.

Let me know... that'd be where I'd start though...

YAh i would just do what darksamurai said. That is about the only thing that would work.

if you keep having problems try reseting your bois and reconfigure foy plug and play os enabled and that might take care of it
